Make sense with all the talks with NHL expansion to Seattle / Quebec City getting expansion NHL teams... with Detroit moving back to the west balancing out the divisions to 8 teams each.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Quebec_City_Amphitheatre - Dropping $400 mill on something they are unsure of. Unless they use it for curling

Seattle;s plan is to bring back the sonics, building a new multi-purpose arena. Still in the talks right now...

Detroit would as for some cheese with their whine about moving back to the west divisions.
Not sure who else the NHL can move to the west that makes sense geographically.

How is that remotely ideal? So, instead of getting huge expansion fees, the NHL gets paltry relocation fees?

To be fair, ideal would have all the sunbelt teams pulling 20k fans a night, and expansion into QC and Seattle bringing in extra cash.

The sunbelt teams bringing in 20k fans a night is a mirage. A second team in the GTA is also likely a mirage, unless the Leafs feel generous about giving up some fans and territory for a second team in say Marham/Hamilton.

I really doubt the NHL can support 32 teams if it can't support 30 properly.

Why on earth would you think of it in terms of expansion/relocation fee? It's ideal in that shitty franchises in shitty fan bases can move to cities that would have a better chance at embracing hockey. The NHL thinks like you so instead of having a good product with profitable teams, they have some profitable teams and some incredibly awful teams that lose money like crazy.

But hey, who cares as long as Bettman gets his money, right?

That being said, with the way the league is structured right now, it's more likely we'll see two Western expansion teams than moving any existing franchises...which is moronic. If anything, the league should scrap a couple teams entirely and have 28 instead.

I think they can do better than 28. Two Florida teams, Phoenix, and maybe Carolina? Reduce travel in that division, and every team gets better with those players. That said, we on the west coast lose out on cheap tickets and a reason to visit Phoenix lol

On a serious note though- it's not just the NHL. There's NO way the PA will sign off on almost 90 NHLers losing their jobs. So if I were to be a betting man, we're looking at a 30 team league (with room for expansion), and relocations galore.

All the money are in Seattle and Quebec city right now... which you wont hear about until after the Quebec city stadium is almost complete in 2015.

Players want more money and this is the only way for them to get it by having more expansion teams to fit under the cap.

Yeah, so bringing $1B+ in expansion fees for 2 new teams is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY worse than having 2 teams losing a whopping $50M/year combined ... Those expansion teams, even if they don't contribute a dime to revenue-sharing, would bring in enough in relocation fees alone to operate Phoenix and Florida at their current losses for 20 years.

And I'm sure the NHLPA and PHPA would love to scrap 92 existing jobs instead of creating 92 new jobs, too. Just to get teams out of what you deem are "shitty" franchises.

Florida's franchise is fine. They found new buyers in absolutely no time who ponied up more than the asking price.

Phoenix is the only one that is in trouble and the new agreement has an out clause to get out of there in 4 years, anyways.

Some of the big things with the new CBA from the NHLPA's standpoint were to improve revenue sharing, increase league-wide revenues, and increase the number of jobs available for players in the NHL.

You do realize that its the owners who pay Bettman his salary, and its the same owners who have unanimously chosen to re-sign him time after time right?

So at the end of the day Bettman is doing something right by bringing in money for all of the owners, whether their respective teams are raking it in or bleeding red and 'losing money like crazy', the owners really aren't in that bad a situation, at all.

Seattle and Quebec would be paying expansion fees, relocate panthers to Vegas/Oklahoma/Kansas City to even out amount of teams in east and west

Put an NHL team in Vegas and watch the "lower body injuries" start piling up

I'd be shocked if a professional sports league placed a team in Vegas. There are just too many risks to outweight any sort of benefit.

Seattle and Quebec do not necessarily have to pay expansion fees. It depends what the NHL does with said cities. If they choose to move current NHL teams to those locations, it's simply a relocation.

I don't think Quebec is as likely an expansion market as Hamilton/Markham or Seattle. The potential worth of another franchise in GTA is huge, but that's assuming TML even accepts any deal calling for a second team in their backyard. It would have to be a huge payment going to MLSE for them to even think about it. But that "pie-in-the-sky" thinking is why the NHL is waiting to expand in that area, as opposed to simply relocating a franchise like what Balsillie tried to do.

As for Seattle, it looks like Hansen wants to fill out the arena with both NHL and NBA. Since he has deep pockets, it makes Seattle a likely target for "expansion" as well.

Kansas would be a good site for relocation, since it already has an NHL-ready arena waiting for a tenant. That said, like JMac said, PHX would likely be the only target franchise for relocation in the near future. And personally, I don't see any upside with moving from PHX to KC.

While true, there's only going to be 3 cuts. With 3 non-draft eligible players on said list, it's unlikely that Horvat or Shinkaruk will be cut. They're established players in the CHL. Reinhart, Ekblad and McDavid have to play to their absolute best and outshine respective position players to be taken. I'm not saying it's unlikely, because the latter two were given exceptional status as 15 year-olds, but they also have the most opportunities to come back and play for Canada.
