Good trade, since you all know how coveted these Swiss/Spanish defensemen are.

No other choice I guess.
Bieska, Tanev, Alberts, Weber are all out. Doesn't this leave Corrado and Diaz now.

Keep in mind Diaz can be flipped on deadline day.
Probably more than what Weise would fetch.

I think Weise has always seen himself as having the potential to be a third line scoring guy, when everyone else sees him as a grinder. I didn't hate the guy, but certainly didn't love him. Someone like Archi is an adequate replacement, especially since he will actually bring that physical presence as he knows the role expected of him.

LOL, what a dumb trade for the Islanders to acquire this twat. I don't know what his mindset was but I'm guessing Matt Moulson would have resigned if offered a new deal? So now at the end of the season they have no Moulson, No Vanek and they lost a 1st and a 2nd round pick in the upcoming draft. Yes they can move Vanek before the deadline and possibly get a 1st rounder back but dollars to doughnuts it will be to a playoff team which will mean it's a late round pick. Once they move him they'll have neither asset from deadline to the end of the season, they'll probably drop to a lottery pick (that now belongs to Buffalo) and they are still down a second round pick.
Leave it to the Islanders to make the money trades with or without Milbury. Report: Vanek turns down 'substantial' offer from Islanders Quote:
Thomas Vanek's NHL future does not appear to be with the New York Islanders.
Newsday's Arthur Staple tweeted Monday morning that his sources indicate the 30-year-old Austrian has turned down a "substantial" contract offer from the Islanders.
Staple added that the Islanders are now likely to deal Vanek before the NHL's Mar. 5 trade deadline.
Newsday reported on its web site that the offer is "believed to be in the same range as Vanek's current seven-year, $50 million deal".
The Isles acquired Vanek from the Buffalo Sabres on Oct. 27 in exchange for forward Matt Moulson and a first round draft pick.
In 41 games with the Islanders, Vanek has scored 15 goals and added 23 assists. He has 19 goals and 28 assists in 54 total games this season between the Sabres and Islanders.
Vanek is in the final season of the seven-year, $50 million contract he signed with the Sabres prior to the 2007-2008 season. A one-time Second-Team NHL All-Star, Vanek has scored 269 goals and 266 assists in 639 career games with the Sabres and Islanders.
The Sabres originally selected him fifth overall at the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.

He's not even playing that great this year, either!
Tavares has 64 points and Okposo has 58. You'd think that he'd be racking up more points when paired with 2 players on pace for career years.

Of course, with the Islanders being far from a lock for the playoffs and every team that misses the playoffs having a shot at #1 overall, if they defer the pick to 2015, they stand a chance of this trade extending into true Milbury territory if that pick ends up #1 overall, which would be Connor McDavid.

| The value of Raphael Diaz: Why trading him was a mistake - Eyes On The Prize Quote:
Because of this casting, Diaz's lack of goal production over the last two seasons has seen people constantly attacking him, but here's the problem with that, he's better defensively than offensively.
In fact, he's better defensively than almost every player on the Montreal Canadiens, including the guy Marc Bergevin handed a $4.1M/year extension to before he laced up a skate this season.
| Quote:
Every single statistic that can be found will tell you that for the last two years, Raphael Diaz has been the 4th best defenseman the Canadiens have had at their disposal. Better than Alexei Emelin, and so much better than Murray that they belong in different leagues.

Apparently not. Was really hoping for the NYI to reemerge from the doghouse one day. Guess this trade sets them a few years back again.
