We got nothing out of that luongo deal except for cap relief. Couldn't they just have bought out Booth instead.
Not that MG didn't completely fuck this team up with how he handled the Luongo/Schneider situation, but ...
Markstrom is a top goaltending prospect who was just named AHL player of the month in February and Matthias is a decent bottom 6 forward in his mid-20s.
You can't buy players out mid-season unless the player is placed on unconditional waivers and both the player and the team agree to terminate the contract. Booth has no reason to throw away $350,000.
Having Ballard got us to the final and Grabner is essentially a bust after that one good year Ehroff didnt perform in the finals and wanted $$$
Coho didnt want to be here [maybe due to managements approach] but IMO him VS Kassian is almost a wash and i think Kassian has some good upsides
Goalie situation was a fuck up and alot of these "filler" moves didnt work out
I'll give Gillis more credit than most for building the 2011 team, almost any GM can take over a good team, it takes savy moves to put the right peices in place to get over that hump and into the finals
However, the way management and ownership has treated situations in the past 2 years has left a sour taste in my mouth
Ballard had nothing to do with this team getting into the finals that year. He was garbage from the start to the end besides a handful of pretty hip checks. Sure Grabner was a bust but that 1st round would have been nice in another trade for a COMPETENT player.
Ehroff didn't perform in the finals? Hey news to you, nobody did! You can argue everything went downhill for this team offensively when he left. Let your only puck moving d-man who meshes so well with the twins offensively and retain guys like Bieksa. We could have kept him no problem if that dumb trade for Ballard wasn't made.
I like some of Gillis's moves over the years but at this point, the bad out weigh the good. He needs to go.
I agree that he needs to go but I also acknowledge that there isn't really anyone better to replace him with ATM. Perhaps during the off season something will happen in terms of management.
Just a heads up- Schneider was barely 26 when he was anointed as the starter in Van. Given similar accolades coming up into the pros, and the fact that Markstrom is 2cm shy of 2m tall, he's still a blue-chip prospect. I'd be willing to bet that in 2 years with Rollie Melansen (sp), Markstrom would be the next Ben Bishop.
And MG won't be fired this Summer. He's the one making the mess, and given the team's position and the money MG has made for Frank, he's got at least 1 season to try and turn things around. If he continues to mismanage the team well into next year (and by mismanage I mean pull off deals similar to the goalie deals he's done), then you can count on him being canned.
That means the MG-haters will have one more year to boil over in rage. Or conversely, if he turns the team around in one year, hop back on the MG bandwagon.
Ballard was there, grabner was not. That's how we got to the finals
Also I've been a huge Hockey fan my whole life played hockey forever and I can recall numerous numerous nights where I thought "wow Ballard played great" he was solid but his play was better than it seemed. His confidence was shattered through the scratches etc and all people remember the absolute worst.
And bottom line is ehroff didn't contribute to a win and he took more than he could accept with the canucks Posted via RS Mobile
