The City of Abbotsford will be terminating its contract with the AHL Abbotsford Heat hockey team.
The team has been a financial drain on the municipality since it relocated to Abbotsford in the 2009-2010 season after a two year stint at Moline, Illinois. The City of Abbotsford signed a ten year contract with the team to cover any shortfalls beyond its annual guaranteed revenues of $5.7 million.
However, the team has failed to break even with Abbotsford taxpayers bailing out the franchise on an annual basis ever since the inaugural year. Abbotsford provided the Heat with $450,000 in the 2000-2010 season, $1.37 million in 2010-2011, and $1.76 million in 2011-2012.
Receding game attendance has been the source of the team’s financial hardships. The average attendance last season was 3,778 fans per game at the 2007-built, $64.7 million City-owned Abbotsford Entertainment & Sports Centre. During the 2012-2013 season, average game attendance was less than 2,500, placing the team dead last in the 30 franchise league.
Attendance issues could lie with the team’s designation as a farm team of the NHL Calgary Flames, a rival team of the Vancouver Canucks, and the Fraser Valley’s relatively small and rural population to support such a business.
In addition to subsidizing the Heat’s operational costs, taxpayers are also responsible for about $2 million in annual hockey arena maintenance subsidies.
I saw a game during the lockout that was pretty good they played buffalos AHL team, coho, bareschi and a few other notables were there also. That particular night they had 2$ beers and 1 hot dogs was a pretty decent game also

Let's hope the Franseco will be smart enough to move the farm team from utica to abbotsford.
It's stupid to put a AHL team out here. Too far from the other teams makes travel a nightmare. Most AHL teams are based out east and the more travel would take away from practice time.

Francesco tried to move the farm team to Abbotsford, but he and the city couldn't agree on terms, and he moved it to Utica in the end. The city said they were open to trying to negotiate a deal again in the future though. The rumor is he sought the same revenue guarantee as Calgary and the city outright refused.

From what I remember they couldn't move here due to the contract with Calgary they couldn't get out of. No question if Utica came here the arena would be packed every night
If they happen to grab first overall, which guy would you go with? Bennett/Eckblad/Reinhart?
I'd go with Bennett. We're not stacked on goaltending now, so might as well change up the system and play a more offensive and up tempo style. Can't do that without offensive players Posted via RS Mobile

It was reported that Calgary was prepared to drop to contract and that it would not be a problem.

From what I can remember Calgary wouldn't drop the contract since Utica didn't have a place to play and Calgary said they would sue if the contract was cancelled with the city of Abbotsford.
I retract the supply fee point, I remembered that detail incorrectly:
"Banman declined to delve into specifics of negotiations with the Canucks, but said they did not request a supply fee agreement similar to the one that the Heat have with the city."
but, I stand by the Flames being prepared to step aside:
"Both of the parties which run the Heat – the Flames, who own the team and handle the hockey operations, and Fraser Valley Sports and Entertainment (FVSE), which manages the business side – were willing to step aside and make room for the Canucks.
That's according to FVSE's Lane Sweeting, who said his group gave the City of Abbotsford and the Canucks "the opportunity to make a deal."
"Our goal is to have a successful American Hockey League team in Abbotsford," Sweeting explained. "It doesn't matter whether we own it or whether the Flames own it or the Canucks own it."
