buying used/old dirt bikes

first off, woulda posted this in riders corner section, but this will get more views and hopefully a faster reply.

basically, ive been trying to find an old dirt bike that doesn't run. ive got a lot of free time on my hands, and wouldn't mind fixing up an old bike. rip it apart completely and make it look pretty and have it running again.

ive tried cragslist already, got 0 replies. was wondering if theres a place I can just buy a dirtbike that doesn't run...would a pick a part yard have one? if not, any suggestions as to where I could find one? (hopefully someone on here has one that they're willing to sell lol)

thanks!

They are hard to find because everyone wants to do the same as you. I picked up an 88 xr200 for $700 and I love it. I would rather it than a 2014 model.

Costs me about $4 in gas, quiet, super reliable, light, starts 1st kick, parts are cheap.

My only advice would be to just keep refreshing craigslist. I scored a legit 06 crf250r that wasn't running for $500. Called within mins of the posting and by the time I drove there he had 20+ calls.

All the bike wreckers I know want to bend you over and mostly have junk.

if you don't mind me asking, who are the bike wreckers? I tried looking up on google but couldn't find nothing. im more then willing to part things out over the summer...buy the engine one day....buy a frame when I can, forks...etc etc.

There are 2 on the Langley bypass I can't remember the name. There was muddy motors in abby who were decent but I think they might have closed. Best bet is eBay. You can find some crazy deals on motorcycle parts even newer stuff. I would suggest buying a running complete beater bike if at all possible. Piecing together a bike will be a headache and more expensive as you need every nut/bolt/clip/cable etc. what's your budget and what kind of hog are u lookin for? 2/4 stroke? cc? moto/trails? I can ask a few people.

I was looking for a 2 stroke, anything from 1985-now. Was looking for a complete bike, running or not..figured it woulda been cheaper if it wasn't running, but oh well. Price range depends how old and beat up it is, maybe 1000 at max seeing as how I'll be replacing 75% of it

Make sure you check all the swingarm and shock bearings, wheel bearings, swing arm etc. A lot of people overlook these when buying a "fixer upper" then quickly realizes it's another $500+ to fix all that stuff.

I can count on multiple hands the amount of times a customer brought in a roach dirtbike they got for a "great deal" and we quickly found many many things wrong with it that once fixed up would cost more than just buying a decent bike to begin with.

You can call Chop Shop Cycles in richmond and see what they have. They have mostly road bike parts, but have some dirt bike stuff from time to time.
