Selling car to someone who lives in Edmonton, any advice?

How does this differ in any way than if I were to sell it to someone local that lives in BC.

Thanks in advance guys.

Well I'm not shipping the car or getting money wired to me or some BS, he's driving down here and is paying in cash, in terms of paper work, the ownership is transferred and it's all on him after that to get it inspected and insured in Edmonton correct?

best thing to do would be to call in to, or walk in to an ICBC dealer and propose the question. I know a few people over here have done it but I am not entirely sure of the process.

I shall tomorrow morning, just wanted to see what RS has to say.

No one have first hand experience?

Zordon 06-30-2013 07:19 PM

Here's the thing, the car will remain in your name in B.C. So if you were to sell it to someone in Edmonton, it will remain until someone brings the vehicle back into BC and registers it. Some people find that it's a big deal but if the buyer registers the vehicle in Alberta, an export code will be added to your BC registration to show it is not the province.

Make sure you get paid in cash if you want to be on the safe side.

I do,

all you need to do is give the bottom part of the registration slip to the buyer with your signature on it.
obviously return your plates and the top part of the registration to autoplan, just say you sold the vehicle.

also you can just make a document outlining the sale, just sign it and give him that.

that's all he will really need

Oh really? Do you think it will come back and bite me in the ass one day? Now I'm paranoid knowing my name is on something that isn't mine. :S But yes cash or nothing.

Ah okay, the vehicle is currently only on storage insurance so no worries about the plates, if I go to autoplan with the buyer and say I'm selling this vehicle to him, and he's from Edmonton, they should help me out right? Also how will he drive it back to Edmonton since it hasn't passed provincial inspections on his end.

Nothing to worry about, just do what 1exotic says about the plates and cancelling your insurance.

The only time it may bite you in the ass is if the buyer abandoned the car in BC somewhere and the car incurred towing/storage fees but that's really using your imagination.

Okay, thanks a lot for the feedback!

I would meet up at an ICBC or insurance place and get the paperwork all done there...

If the money smell like weed, you know where the money came from :)

Yeah that's a good idea, I'm bringing along a friend as well to make sure everything goes smoothly, aha no doubt, money is money. :fullofwin:

I did this a few weeks ago.. it's really simple.

- Make up a document that outlines the details of the transaction (names, addresses, vehicle, purchase price, DL #s, signatures)
- both of you should fill out/sign it
- get paid by the person in cash, and deposit it straight to your bank so they can verify it on the spot
- give them your registration (bottom half of your insurance)

that's it.. you *can* do it at an autoplan place, but they won't be of any use because
a) they aren't involved at all
and b) they might not even know or have experience with out of province sales

In what instance would this document be needed? So when I give them the registration, and than they drive it back to edmonton, it is still technically registered under my name until it is inspected and than registered under the buyers name? And will the buyer have to drive it home using a day permit under his name or mine?

freakshow 07-01-2013 12:07 AM

you would never 'need' the document, but it's just to record the details for your own records.

They should get a day permit in their name from AB (they need your VIN for this), and they just bring it with them to vancouver. as soon as you give them the registration, they should put up their day permit plates and drive back under their name

So if they didn't purchase one from AB, can they still purchase one from BC under their own name?

Thanks for being so helpful btw, really appreciate it.

Edison_Chen 07-01-2013 01:41 AM

It depends on AB permit rules. The most popular option for out of province purchasers are to go into an auto plan agent office in BC with a completed apv9t and with a signed reg. The broker can issue a BC permit for the out of province customer, and the purchaser will be the applicant on the permit.

Okay, I see, so will this apv9t form be available at any auto plan and than he can fill it out on the spot?

Edison_Chen 07-01-2013 05:52 PM

Yes it will be available at any autoplan office

Dan_T_Civic 07-01-2013 11:53 PM

Thanks for all the help guys, will let you know how everything goes tomorrow.

fliptuner 07-02-2013 12:56 AM

apv9t is your basic transfer form. Make sure it's filled out in full, with all the purchaser's info and check that his ID matches. You keep the bottom copy, purchaser keeps a copy and ICBC or Alberta DMV/insurance company keeps the others.

If you really want to cover your ass, try to get the buyer to purchase the permit as Edison suggested. Why? Aside from the hand written transfer form, you have proof, through ICBC, that the car was purchased and insured by another party. This should get you off the hook, should anything happen to the car before he gets it inspected/registered/insured in Alberta.
