| I need some advice:
My 1 year term is about to end with Optik cable + Internet.
I had a promo for my first 12 months as a new customer, paying around $40.
Chances are, I won't be able to get another deal with similar pricing, but I need some "damage control".
100% happy with the service, nothing ever messed up in the 12 months, and would settle with exactly what I have now.
Any tips on how to go about when I call them to renew?
I've heard some people suggest to just go month to month and wait for a deal, but is this more trouble than to just try to negotiate something for another short term? If the price is good, I wouldn't mind locking in 3 years either.

do what I do, call them up and tell them how happy you are as a telus customer and that you want to stay a telus customer but you are very concerned about the upcoming price increase. tell them shaw is offering you BLANK but you don't want to go to shaw.
I have found this method works every time and it works far better than calling them up to bitch and moan.

| Offer 1:
My bundle at reg price is $93. They offered me a deal of $66 for the next 6 months, not locked in. Offer 2:
Or lock in 3 years, keep my same rate ($40~) for 12 months, then pay reg price in last 24 months.
Not sure if I can still budge that $66 price, but would it be better to take the first offer and hope I can get another promo in 6 months time? Locking in 2 years at full price doesn't look fun.
I assume I was speaking with loyalty or retention agent, as I pushed the numbers for plan cancellation.

Bump
Has anyone looked into the student deals for internet right now? I don't need cable, just internet service, and all the deals are quite similar. But I'm not sure the quality of service, actual bandwidth provided, etc each operator (shaw, telus, bell) provides. Looking for some advice!

For telus the student pricing is basically half off regular price for a year.
I have telus 50 for 40 a month locked in for a year.
Telus has been great to me , i get advertised speeds and zero downtime which is make factor.

I've been with Telus for a year. No issues with their internet, speeds were consistent as advertised when I checked on various internet speed tests.
Service has been pretty good when you call them.
I had to call them when I wanted to cancel my box rental after I bought a PVR unit.
Their initial installation took a long time though. As in I had to book an appointment and their next available time slot was almost 3 weeks later.

Have an issue I can't seem to solve with my Telus internet.
I get the advertised speeds with ethernet, even faster sometimes averaging 26-27mbps (paying for 25mbps), however it's as if my WiFi speeds are capped at 15mbps. Doesn't matter how close or how far I take my MacBook, my iPad, my iPhone, and my desktop gaming PC which I also use a WiFi USB stick with, I can never get above 15mbps.
I've had Telus replace numerous faulty router/modems before, 3 times actually, just had the new model Actiontec installed today after I specifically requested for them not to give me the old model anymore because of its poor reliability, however I just ran a speed test after coming home from work and found that I am still maxing out at 15mbps on all my WiFi devices.
Does Telus cap their WiFi at 15mbps? When the installer came he simply said that there's too much interference in my apartment with all the various networks that it's impossible to get the advertised 25mbps as far as WiFi connections go. He said as long as I'm getting 25mbps on wired speed tests, which I am, there's nothing to be concerned about.
Is this true?
*update* ran a couple more speed tests on both my desktop and my MacBook, strange thing is the more speed tests I run, the better the results I achieve. Managed to get 24mbps on my MacBook after 3 runs and 21mbps on my desktop after 3 runs as well.

There may be congestion especially in the 2.4ghz range. If your devices all support wireless n 5ghz then moving to a router/extender that has 5g could improve your throughput.

Check out CIK Tel, been using them for about 6 months now. They are a Shaw reseller. I am paying $29.99/month for the first year, then $39.99 thereafter (25mbps/2.5mbps). Unlimited downloads, No contracts, Non-throttling. Local company, it was a bit of a hassle to set up at first, but it was worth it after. I'm saving about $40 per month right now, most importantly, it's UNLIMITED download.

There is also the option of Novus.. if it's available in your region. Fiber optic, and since they're the underdog ISP, they're prices are usually much better.

The only time I will experience downtime is if Shaw is down too.
EDIT: I wanted to keep my existing line with Shaw while getting a new installation from CIK, so there were some communication issues relayed from within their company, so I kept getting different answers from them, but in the end it worked out.

So I just spoke with a Customer Service reps of CIK Tel, and they said the promotion is back again for new members/activation. This is for their 25mbps/2.5mbps package, and they are a reseller of Shaw, so if you're using Shaw now, why pay more for the same service?
$29.99/month for the first year then it's
$39.99/month after the first 12 months
There's no contracts, no obligations, completely unlimited downloads. Let me know if anyone's interested, I will refer you and you will get $10 off on your first month of service.
For more info: CIK TELECOM INC

If you go with Shaw, do not get the Motorola DCX3510-M PVR. Worse PVR ever. Recordings get messed up all the time.
PVR loses the Resume function on previously watched recordings
Can't rewind on live tv frequently
Channels freezes
Shaw's response..."have tried rebooting?"
