What happened to the days of yearly hardware upgrades so long as your contract was renewed every time you did it? We're the carriers just being super generous back then or what

meh i'm glad i switched my rogers plan to the bc health corporate plan under my dad for 50bux.. it's 7.50 more than what i used to pay but at least i don't have to worry about discount shit wearing off.. so how does renewal work with the new 2yr structure now?? are they going to say oh in order to renew and get a new phone.. you must be on the new "2yrs" plan and the old grandfathered plan are no longer eligible??

A wise man once said (a few messages up in this thread): "Well, congratulations OpenMedia and all you "I want it all and I don't want to pay for it" whingers... you got what you asked for. Surely you didn't think the providers wouldn't find some other way to make up the shortfall?"

It seems better to just sign up for a plan now rather than wait. I'm hoping that when my contract runs out, I can just buy a phone and go month to month with my current plan because that pricing is shit.

I'm also not an advocate of openmedia (I think they're way too leftist)...but I was hoping that robelus would try to offer better plans to keep customers from going to verizon if that deal goes through, obviously not though. I don't get how they can essentially double the 6gb plan that I have right now...but offer the exact same service.

It looks like the route of just buying phones outright is the way to go right now.

they are probably trying to get as many people locked into a stupid plan before the take over..
If people do sign up before that happens, I think they are misinformed by others or just plain stupid...

I don't think they're too different from a lot of consumer-advocacy groups: they got together to fight one (perceived) injustice, got a lot of support, won(?) their battle against Goliath... and suddenly got all full of themselves and now have to go looking for windmills to tilt at to maintain their legitimacy. If that means stirring some people up with a bunch of hyperbole and "us against them" sentiment and damn the consequences, then so be it.

the thing is.. they dont force you to sign a contract.. they have pay as your go plans... but if you want something for free, then you have to give up something...

CRTC made it impossible to renew 3 year contracts starting December 2013.

I don't know about other carries, but with Telus, the contract has only (functionally) ever been for the hardware itself; the voice/data plans don't "expire" with the contract requiring a new/different plan. I've had my same plan (more or less) for three phones now. Basically the "contract" is just saying, in return for getting this phone cheap, you're gonna stick with us for the next "X" years.

I'm with Telus and i'm halfway through my 3year contract, was thinking of renewing early for an S4, but not if i have to switch to their shitty plans.

my plan with 1GB data is $50 now, would cost $85 with the new ones.

after my 2 years are up, i would really consider switching to a different provider

You shouldn't have to change your plan when you renew and get a new phone... isn't that what I just said? I even got to keep my same airtime plan when I switched from CDMA to a GSM phone (although they had to change the data plan because my old "unlimited for $15/mo" package wouldn't transfer to the newer system... but at least they gave me 6GB for $30)

if i was going to renew, they said i would need to bring my own phone or buy one outright in order to stay on my existing plan. if i were to buy a phone on one of their 2 year contracts, i would need to change to one of their shitty plans

they cannot renew 3 year contracts according to CRTC's new policy. therefore, you MUST change your current 3 year plan when its up if you want hardware subsidy. If you don't want hardware subsidy then you can keep your plan on month to month.

I thought CRTC made it so that carriers can't charge cancellation fee after 2 years out of a 3 year contract.

Nowhere can I find something that says they banned 3 year contracts altogether. That looks like something the carriers did to screw the consumer again.

i just made a switch from wind to fido since i need a more stable cell reception for a new career and i just picked their unlimited everything 2gb plan for $60.. since i had my own unlock phone, im not on contract

when i was with wind and being a note 2 user, i rarely go over 2gb per billing unless i watch alot of youtube vids and with the optional incrimental $10/gb if i go over, thats $70 for a 3gb its still cheaper than what the new 2 year contract is offering..

i really wish i picked that 6gb plan from last summer
