TELUS alters monthly price plans as Canada enters the era of two-year commitments

Quote:
TELUS is transitioning to a model of two-year contracts along with the rest of the Canadian market, and is set to increase monthly prices accordingly when the changes take effect at the end of the month.

Specifically, TELUS will be separating its voice-and-text from its data pool charges as a way to more clearly delineate between parts of the business that are revenue positive (the latter) and revenue neutral (the former).

Dubbed SharePlus, the company has broken down the base price into five categories: Smartphone, Smartphone Lite, BYOD-SIM-only (bring your own device), Tablet, and Tablet BYOD. All voice portions include unlimited nationwide talk and text, and include voicemail, call display and call waiting.

Once selected, the individual or family will then choose to add a certain amount of data from the pool, for single use or to be shared with up to five devices on the same account. The range spans $15 for 250MB to $100 for 6GB and $150 for 10GB. The base price of a typical high data-need smartphone user who purchases a new iPhone 5 with a 6GB plan will increase from $100 today to $155 on July 30th, when the plans go into effect.

While the second part of the equation — revised subsidy costs on the smartphones themselves — have not been revealed, it appears that monthly prices for the majority of users will be increasing, especially for those with higher data needs. Because the company doesn’t mention hardware pricing in the press release, we’re under the assumption that they will remain unchanged for the time being, and the trend towards increased prices on a two-year term will begin in the coming months.

TELUS is also incentivizing users to bring their own devices to their network by discounting $20 from the monthly voice-and-text price; there are no discounts for data, though, when choosing the BYOD option.

The company will also be introducing a new set of two-year plans for small businesses, some of which will offer built-in U.S. roaming.
If I'm understanding this correctly, the comparable Fido/Koodo/Virgin $60 plan is $90 at Telus (Smartphone lite + 2GB). It seems to me Telus will be the first one to ass rape new customers with a thorn bush with hot sauce as a lubricant. Will Rogers and Bell follow suit? Is this to show their resentment to the CRTC's new policies?

Yep, except some carriers have an "unlimited" higher-tier option. Even though there's throttling after some point, at least there's no overage with an unlimited plan.

Sprint has a unlimited everything (including data) plan for $80. I'm not sure if it is throttled after a threshold though.

Telus is expensive once they move to the 2 year structure.

Wow that's really expensive! Currently paying fido $45 with unlimted Canada Voice mail call display and 2GB. The same package with Telus assuming I have my own phone $35 + $45 for 2GB of data my bill would be $80 almost 2x as much as I paid now.......

-200min weekday
-weekend and evening from 6pm
-100mb

it was to help a buddy with his ACN commision, but it was also one of the worst decision ive ever made in my life.

I think there is 2 ways for the companies to "ass-rape" their customers.
Option a) less subsidy on the phones on a 2yr contract..so $399.999-44.99 for a top tier $699.99 reg price phone on a 2 year year.
Option b) same subisdy as now, but a price hike on their plans..so if you want your Galaxy S4 for $149.99, your $60 plan will now be $90.

They won't change your plan for now but if you want a new phone on a contract they will most likely froce you onto the new plans.

Well that's the trap I think. They're going to make prices so ridiculous that people are going to demand three year contracts to come back.

I'm hoping the CRTC catches on to this bullshit if this is the case. The whole point was to help consumers with these new laws, and if providers are going to circumvent this by pulling this off, it isn't right.

I'm at $70 for 200 min, 6PM Ev/Wknd, unlimited text/picture messaging, CID/VM, 6GB data...looks cheap in comparison to this new structure.

CRTC's job isnt to enforce prices. I think the CRTC already overstepped by enacting 3 year max contracts. it was just a feel good move in response to complaints. Robellus shouldnt be forced to reduce their profits so this is what happens.

Well, congratulations OpenMedia and all you "I want it all and I don't want to pay for it" whingers... you got what you asked for. Surely you didn't think the providers wouldn't find some other way to make up the shortfall?

Now you're all going to bitch and moan about this, and so the CRTC will step up and enforce some kind of cap on the plan fees... and next thing you know phones will be going for $1000, or a nice cheap $400 if you get a two-year contract, or some other way they can skate around the regulators.

Way to go, fuckers.

I got in on the "$15 unlimited data" deal Telus had years ago with their CDMA smartphones... had to give that up when I switched to GSM phone, but they did give me 6GB for $30. Also got in a nice promotional deal... oh, 7 or 8 years ago? $45/mo for 450 minutes, free weekends and evenings from 5pm to 7am, and unlimited talk and text to 10 favorites. Pretty happy with that deal.

Been with Telus for over 15 years (since BC Tel had their "Big Flippin' Deal" promotion for a Motorola flip-phone) and been pretty happy with them over the years. Never had an issue with three-year contracts. People just get greedy, and now it's biting them in the ass.
