2013 Honda Civic Si vs 1998 Acura Integra Type R : Car Reviews

Quote:

In fact, given the success of Compass360 Racing in both Grand Am and World Challenge touring car series, and in light of Honda America’s strong contingency (cash) rewards and parts discounts for Honda brand racers, my heart tells me that there’s hope for Honda to fully rekindle its go-fast spirit and produce another Type R, be it Civic-based or built on an entirely new chassis.

But my head tells me Honda isn’t in the Type R business any more; it’s in the Earth Dreams business, and is more focused on fuel efficiency and green technologies than it is on reconnecting with its rich high-performance road car history and the legion of loyal fans it won with the Type R, the S2000 and the NSX.

Perhaps all is not lost, though. The 2015 NSX is almost upon us (and already in Jerry Seinfeld’s garage), and maybe it will usher in a new era of high-performance Hondas that’ll make us look at the DC2 Integra Type R as a relic rather than as irreplaceable. But until then, we’ll have to accept that the 2013 Civic Si is the highest performing Honda in the lineup, and as a fun-to-drive road car it does its job very well. It doesn’t have the hardcore performance orientation needed to replace the Type R, though, so for go-fast Honda enthusiasts, the wait continues.
Si interior looks amazing
Edmunds did a similar piece on the ITR against the Si a few years back
I hope Honda will bring the new 1.6L turbocharged Civic Type R to North America with the new NSX...last I heard they want to build the fastest FWD car around the 'Ring

So what do guys think th Type R in the video is worth?

twitchyzero 07-21-2013 11:20 PM

guy didn't mention milage or status...interior looked minty tho...im guessing 11-12k
according to the youtube vid comment section the Civic Si with HFP package was half a second faster than the ITR at this track (Toronto Motorsport Park)

tofu1413 07-21-2013 11:28 PM

im pretty sure a FD2 type R civic would beat a DC2 type R integ on a track...

technology came a long way.

a shame they didnt offer a CSX type R...

Timpo 07-22-2013 12:05 AM

Still reigning as the best handling FWD platform in history.

Not so, the best FWD car right now is Renault Megane RS. (@ 8:07.97 Nurburgring)
????FF?????????????? ????RS [???] All About (you'll need Google Translate)

You will need Google Translate to read this article, but Honda is working on 2015 Civic Type-R to make it a fastest FWD in the world.

Unless the performance envelope is vastly lopsided (and it isn't between the FD2 Type R and DC2 Type R), you can always find a track where one car performs better than the other.

Honda's claim to fame was their cheap, reliable, and fun product offerings. The NSX is a high end performance vehicle that does not cater to the same market as the old CRX, EG/EK Civic Si, Integra, or even the RSX etc. It is disappointing to see them walk away from this market, and I don't understand why their corporate leaders chose this path. Surely they don't have to alienate their original supporters while they pursue the boring appliance crown?

Is there even a current vehicle from any manufacturer that comes close to what the ITR was?

20-30 more hp & tq, stiffer suspension, Brembo brakes to compensate for Macpherson strut and 200kg weight...I think it'll be down to the driver and track

tofu1413 07-22-2013 03:11 PM

that 8th gen civic drives like a boat compared to the DC2.

newer cars with more standard equipment is really making cars heavier by the year... with not much of an increase in performance. Ruins the overall driving experience.

I was think in the 15 to 16k range. Could not find one Type R on Ebay moters and only one for sale in Canada on trader.ca. That one was on sale for 14K and was modded. A bone stock one would be very hard to find.

twitchyzero 07-22-2013 03:45 PM

i've been checking out their value every now and then
15-16k is usually the rare model year/limited ed ...like the 99/01...and that's like stock and low km's...97 are also pretty rare
98/00 avg condition is in the figure i quoted earlier
I check local classifieds....Honda-Tech don't count cause they have 20% fanboy tax
here's a very reasonable listing
1998 Acura Integra Type R

The one on sale on RS is a much better deal with all those goodies included :drool

Seriously doubt it, the stock FD2 have pace that a stock DC2 cant match.

Like someone said earlier, technology has come a long way.

The FD2 ran 2:35.20 in Suzuka, a big F1 track. Here's the times for some other JDM sports car tested by the same people.

Evo 6 2:36.50
RX-7 2:35.81

The FD2 is one of the rawest Type R ever, and Evo.co.uk called it more of a 4 door NSX-R than a Civic Type R successor in spirit.

tofu1413 07-23-2013 02:17 PM

yep. saw the same video from best motoring... FD2 laps suzuka faster than a R34 GTR...

FD2 is indeed the faster car out of the box..

2001 Limited Edition Acura Integra Type R

Is there really only 4 in BC?

tofu1413 07-23-2013 03:19 PM

there should be more than that..

i know of two 01' specs off the top of my head...

one resident RSer still has his!
another one is a JDM front end itr with a stripped interior...
