Telus truck kills jaywalking 58 year old woman in Richmond

Police warn about risky jaywalking after Richmond pedestrian killed by truck

A 58-year-old Richmond woman was killed after being hit by a truck near Westminster Highway and Garden City Avenue on Monday morning.

The accident happened at 10:40 a.m. when the woman, who was jaywalking, was struck by a Telus truck.

The driver remained at the scene and was co-operative, said Sgt. Cam Kowalski of the Richmond RCMP. Neither speed nor alcohol were factors, he said.

Pedestrians should be cognizant of their surroundings when crossing intersections or roads and always use designated crossing areas, Kowalski added.

Witnesses are asked to contact the Richmond RCMP’s road safety unit at 604-278-1212.
Probably a dumb question, but will the driver be charged with anything at all? Saw a hand-written sign at the intersection today and it was asking for witnesses. Not sure how a witness would be helpful in this accident though...

Sorry if re-post; did a search and couldn't find anything. I'm still a noob! Looks like this was about 2 weeks ago.

1000% her fault

Presto 07-26-2013 07:00 PM

Probably thought she was still in HK and looked the wrong way.

Honestly, Im surprised this this doesn't happen more often in Richmond.

RIP be safe don't do stupid shit.

zonda_s 07-26-2013 07:58 PM

real-life frogger: you only get 1 life.

Spidey 07-26-2013 08:09 PM

I also am surprised this doesn't happen more often. Ignorant/clueless pedestrians vs. clueless drivers= recipe for disaster. Richmond needs to do a pedestrian enforcement day where jaywalking tickets are handed out/enforced once a year or month.

JesseBlue 07-26-2013 08:26 PM

i'm sure a boat load of people jaywalk...she was just at the wrong place at the wrong time...heck even people using the crosswalk gets hit...

godwin 07-26-2013 08:33 PM

I am curious about if the victim's life insurance (if she has one) would pay out in cases like this.

Except that people using crosswalks won't be at fault in any way unless they were just jumping into traffic without regard.

it does happen to more ppl in richmond.... my friend saw an incident near blundell and 3 road.... little girl went flying mid air when an old lady (both the victim and the driver was white, so in b4 racist comments) my friend who witnessed it told me that the cops even offered post traumatic therapy..

Yodamaster 07-26-2013 09:27 PM

Woman is 100% at fault, though that doesn't matter anymore, does it?

trollface 07-26-2013 09:53 PM

Nothing will happen to the Telus guy. No negligence on his part, no charges will be filed. This exact same thing happened to someone I know.

If you were driving and I jumped from a tree, nude, on fire and body smeared with Nutella spread and you ran me over. Should you be charged with manslaugher?

Yes, it would.

And this is the part where the insurance company digs and digs to try and prove she was suicidal and not pay.

As long as the policy was written 2 years prior to this incident even if it was a suicide it would still pay.

^ nice, I should be good to go, too............

fliptuner 07-27-2013 02:06 AM

What does the truck being owned by Telus have anything to do with it?

flagella 07-27-2013 06:35 AM

I feel sorry for the truck driver who has to put up with this.

I don't think it happens more. You stated one incident. I'm sure it happens more in downtown Vancouver, but that's a different topic for a different day.

PeanutButter 07-27-2013 07:12 AM

The headline of a telus truck looks more appealing than just a truck.
That's probably why it was written like that.

there will probably be a follow up article "jaywalker's family sues Telus"

q0192837465 07-27-2013 08:24 AM

I guess OP's question is whether the driver or Telus will be named in a legal suit. Lawyers will likely go after the one with the biggest insurance, so it's more likely that the victim's family will go after telus.

This is really strange to hear for me. Just the other day while I was j walking across a one way street downtown, I had a telus truck speed right past me. I could really hear the engine revving pretty loud and was wondering where he was in a rush to get to, or if he was just trying to kill me.
