We were considering a Subaru. She likes the STi for a 4 door, but it is not very roomy and family friendly :P
The legacy seems like a good option too. I will suggest that to her as well.
We are officially starting the look this weekend. We decided on a budget of 15K for the car, but there is plenty more if we need to use it but we want to keep that for the house later this year.

STI will have high insurance premiums (relatively)
For manual and Subarus, I suggest you look south of the border for them. It is much cheaper not to mention it is more plentiful when it comes to manuals. Quote:

If there's "plenty more" and you want to consider something new... Perhaps a Fiesta ST?

Nope, 15K is the cap.
She has decided that she will not spend a penny more than that on her next car.
House trumps car.

does it really have to be MT? Is the biggest reason for that because you think it'll be cheaper in the long run?

I haven't looked in a while but is an STI even possible to be fetched at $15K locally?

If saving is higher priority. Assuming you can get car lease rate at 2%. Lease something that is CPO and use the left over to invest in something with the higher return: REIT, oil stocks or boring stuff like money market etc etc eg put the 10k (after downpayment for the car) in the RRSP so you can take it out for your downpayment on the house and use the gov RRSP credit. It sounds like it is your first house purchase and also assuming you haven't max out your RRSP, TFSA etc etc.
Plunking 15k in one go for a used car when your intention is to save money for down payment is not best use of your principle.

With regards to my finances, that's something you do not have to worry about. I have more than enough to put a down payment on a home. We are looking to BUY not mortgage a home.
No, this is not my first home, 3rd as a matter of fact. But thanks for providing information that I was not asking for. |

I've imported my share of cars in the years so this is not that big of a deal. But she is not overly interested in a Subaru. I will need to take her there to test drive a few and see what she thinks.

Where we plan on moving to will have a decent amount of driving to do compared to where we live now.
Having that extra range would be a huge plus, my only concern is that she had become accustom to a "sporty" car and wants to keep driving fun.
I think a TDI of some form will have to be on the test drive list.
I have done some reading and it seems the new ones suffer from all the extra emissions stuff on them and throwing a decent exhaust on there really helps out.
Would be fun rolling coal in a Jetta hahahaha

300trq at just over 2000rpm will definitely make things feel sporty off the line. 1 ton diesel pickups weren't making much more in the early 90's. tune and dpf delete makes 295trq at the wheels. Read up on tdi hpfp as well. I know 2 people who have had it and I only know 2 people with common rail tdis. Covered under warranty after 3rd party fuel analysis luckily. Posted via RS Mobile |

Something does not seem right to me.
