Car For Wife Advice

Looking for a new car for the wife and kids. Not looking for a van/suv as she wants a car. So that being said need a 4 door.

Budget is $15,000 and not a dollar more.
Must be standard transmission
Can not be older than 2005

We were looking at a Jetta 2.0T as well as a TSX. Can you guys recommend some other vehicles that would fit this bill?

platinum300 07-30-2013 10:12 AM

TSX for reliability.

mos_skeeto 07-30-2013 10:13 AM

Mazda 3

BoostedBB6 07-30-2013 10:22 AM

Reliability is high up there on things we need.

She also wants to make it nice (rims, exhaust, intake, ect ect) Nothing crazy just to dress it up a bit more than your average TSX or whatever car it happens to be.

We looked at the Mazda 3 and she was not a big fan. They seem to want a lot of $$ for not much car.

Honda Fit does a good job at moving people and their things.

Noran 07-30-2013 10:46 AM

Jetta TDI. Reliable, efficient, 6-speed has a nice short throw from the factory, tons of torque, more than enough trunk space and rear leg room, and pretty good looking imo.

This is my mums car. She says she won't get rid of it until it dies out on her.

The older acura TL is not bad

godwin 07-30-2013 10:51 AM

TDI Wagon 2009 Jett TDI wagon

Though TDI wagon manual will be hard to find:

2009 JETTA TDI DIESEL LOW KM

or Mazda 3.

BoostedBB6 07-30-2013 11:16 AM

Add to the list of wants, she wants it to be a semi cool car....that rules out stuff like a fit/echo.

We talked about diesal, as much as I like the mileage she can't stand the smell. It actually makes her physically ill. I thought a TDI would be a good choice too but it's a no go.

The TL is one we looked at too. I think she liked that one so it would be a matter of getting her behind the wheel.

I had a 6 speed TSX, loved it and still miss it. Mine was a 07 with 80,xxx km until late last year. Sold it for $15,500. All it needed since new was oil changes

icemiko 07-30-2013 11:52 AM

I would say TSX, hard to find a 6 speed one though. I had a 2005 TSX, never really had any problems, just regular maintenance.

Or maybe look into the Mazdaspeed 6, 6 speed, awd, turbo and you can get one for $15,000. I am not sure how reliable it is though, maybe someone that owns one can make a comment.

2006 MazdaSpeed6 - ONLY 57,000 KM

More then $15,000 but price is OBO so maybe you can work something out, I think this guy is on RS also.

Good thing they want a manual box then. lol

I like the TL and TSX but the cost of premium fuel might make me lean more toward the TDI wagon or MZ3 hatch

2009+ jetta comfortline or highline over a 2013 jetta treadline.

freakshow 07-30-2013 02:38 PM

2008 - 2012 Nissan Altima.
Tons of space, lots of features, looks decent, can be way under your budget, depending on what year you get.

TSX seems to be well loved and there are loads within the price range.

Guess we will head out to test a few.

sdubfid 07-30-2013 03:58 PM

New tdis don't smell. You could run that exhaust into a baby incubator with all the filters and emission control on there. But it's also the downfall of newer diesels. If you get a 2.0L TDI keep 5-10k for when it needs repairs. I'm a TDI fan but wouldn't recommend anything newer than 2003.
