That sounds like a really awesome experience, definitely something I will do WHEN I'm in Germany one day.
I think I read that the insurance deductible is 2500 euros? Is that correct?
Also, is the ring considered a public road? I'm asking because if I take a "regular" (e.g. Alamo, National, etc.) econobox rental car, will I still be covered by insurance?
Based on my one time autocross experience taking out a few cones, I can definitely see myself understeering...into a guardrail...

If you take a regular rental there and crash it, expect to pay for any and everything from your own bank account.

Based on my one time autocross experience taking out a few cones, I can definitely see myself understeering...into a guardrail... | insurance is based on what car and which company you go with so it'll vary. As for econobox rental cars like from Avis or Budget, those are no longer allowed and if the Staff at the Nurburgring spot you in it, they'll notify the respective company and you'll get charged extra or worse...?? not sure how it goes but I just know that normal rental cars are not allowed.
And yes the Nurburgring is officially a public road, so if you crash then the police will be involved and they'll close down the entire track till they clean up/repair the guardrails.

Driving the Nurburgring can run you between $100'ish for a single lap in a Clio right up to a few thousand dollars for 16 hot laps in a Ferrari 458, though fuel and lap tickets are included in those prices.
Shit, I've got the summer off. I should see about maybe hitting up Germany again and renting an E46 M3 race car or BAC Mono.
BTW, if you ever go to the 'Ring, rent through these guys: RSRNurburg | Nurburgring | Car Rental | Sports Car Hire | Sightseeing Tours | Spa-Francorchamps | Hockenheim
You can even purchase a hot taxi lap in a Porsche GT3 driven by Sabine Schmitz. :

The 'Ring charges you for damaged guard rails by the foot if you crash. So if you crash try to avoid the guard rails |
