I'm not much of an animal expert so can someone shine some light on this for me? Would it be okay to leave your dog in your car for a short amount of time in cool/cold weather? I know a friend who leaves her dog in her car whenever we're out but she would occasionally take her out of the car for a short walk every half hour. She only does this during cool weather though, I've never seen her leave her dog in a car during hot weather.

Call the police emergency number and give the plate number. Even if they are busy they will follow up with the owner at home.
A few years ago I reported a woman who was beating and kicking her dog in a park. Police followed up with me a few hours later and then went to the home owners house with Animal Control. They called me back that evening to say they seized the dog based on the condition it was living in and the owner's lack of ability to control it.

Hahaha, i know it looks bad. even worse since i just moved from surrey but some of my friends are clumsy. i have a key ring of spare keys for them.. if i don't have a key i can still help them
Don't bother with calling the SPCA unless you know for certain the animal is being abused.
I have video of a dog in distress. The German Shepard could barely walk and was pissing all over itself as it tried to walk on 3 legs. 1 of the rear legs was not moving. The fur was all wet.
I suspect the owner left the dog out in the sun.
The dog collapsed onto the ground just outside of the view of my dash cam.
I called up the SPCA with the address of the home owner and they said there is nothing they can do unless we know for sure they is abuse. They have to go through the proper channels which include getting a warrant to enter the house with the police.
Dino. When I get home from work, I will post up a pic of another car that I saw where the owner left the dog inside it and the windows just slightly ajar.

Without a doubt, I would have smashed that window if that dog had been in severe distressed. Although the dog was panting, it was still actively moving around the car and responsive to me.
In retrospect, I should have called the cops and have now put the Burnaby RCMP and SPCA number in my phone should I see something like this again.
In regards to smashing the window, how does the legal side of things work? Although I would have NO ISSUE smashing anything should a child or animal be in noticeable distress (tbh, I would smash a window even if a child was not in distress), I am curious what would happen if I had smashed the window tonight. I remember reading something recently about someone who smashed a window to rescue a dog and was arrested. For the life of me, I can not find the article (I have spent the evening looking for it).
I am sure the police and almost all would agree with the reason to smash the window, but would authorities be bound by the law? If I had smashed the window, rescued the dog, and called the police, who is responsible for the window? What if, by the time the police arrived, the dog was ok...no noticeable issue, etc.
Take a video with your phone first showing the distress of the dog, put the plate in the video etc then smash dat window and and save the little furry guy
well thats what i mean, there should be a test for people before they are allowed to make one. we all know people in our lives who should never have had children. darwinism isn't working fast enough to kill all the stupid.
I went with the misses to a local SPCA to try to adopt a dog and we were rejected because we spend too much time at work. Fair enough.

About an hour ago along Front Street in New West. Hot as fuck outside and a poor boxer was left in a car sitting in the direct sun with only the window cracked an inch.
Called the police immediately and gave the car info and license number. Unfortunately the owners arrived about 2 mins before the police showed up. Gave them an earfull (again) and was told to "mind my own business". I was still there when the police showed up and she set off to look for them. I am hoping, at the very least, the get a visit.

What bothers me even more is the fact that people let their dogs wander around inside the car while they're driving. Or, worse, let's them sit on their lap at the same time. You wouldn't do that with your child; why would you not have your animal at least in a travel cage in the back seat?

My dog stays strapped in with his seatbelt while he's in the car with me. If for some reason I need to stop in a store and he's with me in my car, I'll let him out and tie him up outside the store. Does it take me an extra minute or less? Sure.

When I leave my dog in my car for any length of time my dog is more important then the contents or the car itself. Windows wide open.
This weekend I took my family up to Kamloops to watch a pow wow they had camping onsite and dogs were allowed while on leash yadda yadda. When we arrived we were told otherwise due to asshats not picking up after their dogs and only after driving up from Vancouver and paying for the event.
Whats one to do. I left my guy leashed in our car with a cooler full of cold water windows wide open and hatch wide open. Contents and car be damned steel or root through it dont matter my dog was cool happy and safe.

Should take those photos and have a 1000 of them printed off in a "lost dog" style page, only instead show the car and drivers license and found location and post them up all over.
Or someone should make a Facebook group (lets face it...almost everyone uses it) and put the pictures there so locals can join and see all the assholes that live around them. If they spot a car/owner they know, they can keep an eye out and rip into them. Posted via RS Mobile

In instances like this, you should always call 911 and be on the line with them as you are smashing the window. Be very descriptive about everything you see, ie) kid is unconscious or is struggling. Everything you say to 911 is recorded and is relayed over to the police. This way you would at least have some recording to back you up on why you smashed that window.
Smashing a window may work if the dog is a little purse dog....but it there is a full size (large bread) dog in there, smashing a window may be a very bad idea.
Also, smashing the window may cause the dog to run away.
Many dogs are protective over there owners property and you may get attacked.
In those cases I would be calling the cops.
I guess you would have to asses the situation on a case by case basis but there is still no way around it, if you smash a cars window (regardless of the intent) you are liable for the repairs to that vehicle.
What bothers me even more is the fact that people let their dogs wander around inside the car while they're driving. Or, worse, let's them sit on their lap at the same time. You wouldn't do that with your child; why would you not have your animal at least in a travel cage in the back seat?
That's probably my biggest pet (no pun intended) peeve: dog in lap while driving. If the airbag goes off...
