Use Freephoneline.ca instead, you can transfer your existing number ($25 one-time fee), and use their PC software to make phone calls OR you can purchase your own ATA adapter (or theirs), and pay a $50 one-time fee and they will supply you with the setup instructions (and code) to configure your ATA Adapter so you can use a regular phone to dial out-going and receive incoming calls.

ATA Adapter (average) - $60
ATA Code - $50
Transfer Existing Number - $25

= $135 one-time cost then you never have to pay another landline phone bill again.

I've been using it for 3 years, the sound quality is pretty good. I am on Shaw, I get about 80ms ping to their Toronto servers, which is more than enough. I've never had a drop call, once in a blue moon, they will do server maintenance, but u get at least a 24 hour notice for that, and it usually happens during the early morning hours.

Just a heads up though, they might have a joint surveillance operation with the U.S. government to spy on people of interest. You should look into it.

I've been using freephoneline.ca as well for about 2-3 years with an ata device I bought from them and with the unlock code. I was going to get rid of the home phone anyways and figure I can get free home phone (with a one time payment). Keep in mind that freephoneline was bought by fongo which also runs dell voice. Since freephoneline is free, you get no support at all and have to figure out things on your on by visiting the forums or google. Fongo charges $5/month and you get support.

The only problem I had with freephoneline is earlier this year they change the ringtone frequency to 52mhz and I had it set to 60mhz from them. Took me about 2 hours to figure that out on my own. Also last month I had to change the server from freephoneline to a fongo server before it started to work again. That also took me 2 hours to figure out since the forum is not very active.

The ata device can be taken with you anywhere. Just plug it into a router and a phone and people can call your home number and you can be overseas and answer it. Or you can use the unlock key and use it in a sip app on your cell phone to receive calls to your home number on your phone.

Really? I haven't changed any settings on my ATA since 3-4 years ago. It's been working fine for me.

Yes, the ringtone frequency change was weird cause the phone stopped working for about a week because I thought it must be freephoneline problem. Then when I checked my account it says the ata device is disconnected. I'm not familiar with VoIP stuff so I never touched the ata device settings since they sent it to me a few years before. When they change the server, an email informing me of it would have been nice. The only time they email me is when they are going to do server maintenance.

There must be something wrong with your connection, assuming that Fongo runs off the same servers at freephoneline.ca

I get 80ms ping to voip.freephoneline.ca VOIP server, at that ping, you won't get delays.

If you go over 100-110ms or so, you'll begin to have problems.

Free does sound to good to be true but it is free after you pay for the unlock code. Since Fongo bought freephoneline, they been steering new clients towards the $5/month service. If you're not tech savvy, then that might be a better choice then the free service with no support.

Since you're looking at Yak's $10/month, Fido and Rogers also offer home phone service for $10/month if you are an existing customer.

VOIP lines only have Basic 911. Shaw and Telus digital phone services have Enhanced 911.

Here's a comparison: HowStuffWorks "Basic 911 Systems"

I still have a landline. Hell, one of my phones is corded. Why? Because corded phones don't need power to work in case the power goes out. And chances are if there's ever a big enough emergency that impacts a great deal of people, cell signals are gonna be overloaded. Soooo.... the $5 or so that I pay/month with my internet/tv package is worth the price.
