So I have somewhat frequent pre-orders that get filled for model cars and such on Japanese websites... in the past, they never ever charged taxes and duty for anything ESPECIALLY if you shipped by land (sea)... I think maybe 1 time out of 50 packages I got charged anything... but the last 5 packages in a row for this calendar year... full tax... regardless of the amount... they aren't messing around anymore haha

My expensive book I ordered from England though? Nada. CBSA got a hate on for Japan! hahaha

Careful, don't get tax and duty mixed up...

Toys & models are likely duty free, but they are not tax free.

I knew that, but so easy to just call it taxes. Then, in BC, the taxes are separated, so some items are PST exempt, GST exempt, or both. Levies?

Not sure, now that it's old news, but we're ahead, as taxpayers, because we didn't opt for HST. Correct me if I'm wrong. We lost out in other ways. So complicated for average joe's like me.

Dumb question I probably already know what the answer should be but maybe someone has something definitive.

My son and I just got new passports and will need to head down to Blaine do a walk in and update our docs. My question is does this sort of make our Nexus temporarily invalid since the documents are not accurate now because I would love to just go down Monday and use the Nexus lane but you always hear Nexus are super strict on things.

If you already have an old passport associated with your Nexus, you should be able to update it online.

With my kid, we got him his Nexus before we got a passport for him, so he never had any passports associated with his Nexus card. And because of that, we cannot update his passport info (ie. add his new passport) online. I actually went through the trouble to go to the local Vancouver Nexus office to try and update this, but the lady told me she has (and can only) update the info on the Canadian side, but I'd still need to update the info with the US side again.

So I don't know the answer to your question, and would love to find out what you'd have to do as well.

When I went to the Blaine Nexus centre back in Spring for my kids interview they said anything that is a physical document i.e. passport needs to be updated in person to be verified but everything else i.e. address can be done online. Sure enough too, there was a steady line of people coming in to update documents that morning as well.

My wife changed her last name to mine recently and got her new passport afterwards. We went to Blaine to get the Nexus updated and used the "old" Nexus crossing into the states without any problems.

That must be new, I got a new passport in 2016 and I never updated anything in person. I either called or did it online, but I've been using both the passport and nexus since and have had no issues? Hell I even renewed my Nexus last year?

There are a few things that only nexus office can make the change. Permanent address is one as I’ve done that myself. You can change the Mail to address online, but not the permanent.

In this case, I guess the name (permanent in a sense) is another.

Thanks, guys. My drivers license is about to expire. I have the replacement card already. I just updated the info on the Nexus website. Took a grand total of 3-1/2 minutes of my precious time.

Lol now I'm confused to as I was simply going by what the agent told me. Searching online you have mixed answers on this topic and even on the cbsa website it says

"Passport and citizenship updates as well as a change in residency that could affect your eligibility for NEXUS must be made in person, by visiting an enrolment centre"

The "could affect your eligibility" part is throwing me off though. I'm just going to log in and if it allows me to update online I'll call it the day.

I do remember calling Nexus (not sure if USA or Canada) to update my permanent address when we moved, but that was definitely over the phone and not in person.

Like I said though, things may have changed...and this is probably one of the things you want to make sure is right, rather than be hassled when you're going on vacation or something.

For sure Nexus doesn't mess around. That said, I did log on today and it allows you to update your passport info with a note simply stating that some passports can't be updated online and if it doesn't allow you then you need to go in person. It did allow me so I'm pretty confident it's all good.

Anyone know how bad the border crossing is to get to the USA around 8AM on an average weekday?

Guy asked me to step out and do my signature pose and thrusts.

Other than that, zero wait on the way there and back (had to drop someone off at the airport).

Crossed into the US this morning. Nexus lane at truck crossing 6:45 am. I've never had a border guard ask me so many stupid questions. "Where do you live?" Like what the fudge? Then why am I going down. Where are you going, what are you getting, how much cash do you have, where are you getting the vinyl records, don't they have vinyl records in Canada, just went on and on................... he was flustered, because I had all the answers within seconds. I wanted to say, "Listen son............ you can't throw me off and treat me like some noob."

At least he didn't say, "I grant you permission to proceed..........."

Don't be too offended Grandpa. I believe that's their modus operandi. Ask many irrelevant or repetitive questions (while they have all the info on their screen), and see if everything matches up+your reactions.

I've had officers asking me the same question 3 times (what I was picking up at mailbox). It's just a way for them to see if somehow you slip.

Yeah, for sure, but never had it go for such a long ass time. I cross every week at least once. Been doing it for a long long long time. I get the odd weird border guard, but this was beyond idiotic. I should have tried to crack him up with a dad or Siri joke.

I wasn't offended. Every encounter is special when dealing with them.
