Those ones for the over 70 crowd aren’t even what you need in order to cross the border. They need to be monitored by a professional and then provide you with the written results

Anywhere else (Pacific / Peace Arch / Sumas, etc) you need to do a supervised rapid test.
that wasn't clear without reading 5 pages back based on what was being said.

Once pre-covid, we bought a bottle of wine and a bottle of cider (I think) while on a daytrip in Seattle since it was a wine we wanted to try. We had bought a few other things too, like clothing and some groceries. Anyways, coming back via Peace Arch, using Nexus, they hauled us in to pay tax on the wine. It was so stupid. They were very rude (except for the cashier, he was nice enough). Never again will we bring back any booze unless we are prepared to pay the markup.

Another story comes to mind. I flew back from Mexico into YVR one night. The limit is 750ml of liquor (so basically one bottle) but I had 2 bottles of tequila. I chose not to use the Nexus lane since it was very late at night and the airport was quiet. I thought the guard would be lenient but I was wrong. They hauled me into secondary.

That's where it got a lot worse. At secondary, you wait in one big line for a guard to call you up. Well at midnight, there is only one guard working. There were only 3 people in line but I waited almost an hour.

When I finally got to the front he asked me why I was there. I said "I came back from Mexico and I have two bottles of tequlia instead of one" and he immediately rolled his eyes and let me go.

So I was happy I didn't have to pay but the experience was such that I'll never exceed the limit again if I can help it, unless I find something really rare that I really want.

I brought back 8 bottles of tequila from Mexico in January...

Suitcase was 40lbs overweight

Did I declare? Nope.

One time I was coming back from Dominican Republic with another 6-7 bottles of rum, ended up getting searched for "other" reasons (they were more interested in checking my phone for girls, which was odd). The agent quickly went through my bag and found the bottles of rum wrapped in my dirty underwear and clothes, to which he went "that's a lot of booze", I told him "it's cooking rum" -- he laughed and sent me on my way.

Moral of the story, always ask for forgiveness and not for permission when it comes to bringing back bottles.

The worst thing about being called in to pay taxes isn't the paying itself, it's how you're treated. From the moment you pull into the staging area, CBSA officers are so rude, arrogant, and you're treated like a criminal who was 'caught' trying to mislead them.

Last I checked, buying goods in the USA is LEGAL and I DECLARED it and I'm paying the tax so get off your high horses.

PR isn’t so bad, the cashier girl is just wanting to check your receipts and then do up the form and get you out of there.

Other crossings are exactly as you described, it’s like you’ve done something wrong the entire way.

A lot of Canada is this way I find… banks… police… border guards… this whole “Oh look who has MONEY and is BUYING stuff you motherfucker” hahaha major diff between here and USA mentality wise is that the USA kinda has mutual admiration for people spending and enjoying stuff but in Canada it’s like this big no-no somehow.

I always wondered what the training is like to be a border agent, like what soul sucking personality draining courses do they make you go through to work there?

I would love to meet one outside of a setting where they could cavity search me and just grill them on why they are such pricks lol

I've met a few decent ones who even asked to pet my dog, but the ones who don't even acknowledge her when she sticks her head out the window all excited are people who must be dead inside lol

Just wait till you declare to CBP you're crossing to ship a used car part you sold.

3/3 I've declared and went in to pay the $13 admin fee only to get interrogated for not using the commercial line, misleading them etc.

Dude, this is $60 to ship from Canada vs $15 via USPS. It's a used muffler for fucks sake.

Is that USD $1.48/L, or Cdn $1.48/L?

Small difference, yes I know. Just wanted to make sure which currency it is that you're talking about.

You can bring back a maximum of 200L spread over a max of 6 Jerry cans (30kg maximum each). This is a Transport Canada thing for transporting fuel.

Gasoline is not technically exempt from duty, so just depends who you get I guess.

I know there was chatter about it a few months back, but has anyone been successful in utilizing a positive Canadian PCR test to come back through Peace Arch/Pac Hwy?

From what I gathered the positive test is good to use for 180 days and provides exemptions from on arrival random testing.

Being 5 minutes away from the border, that cheap gas is within an arms reach.

I can't believe some of your experiences with the CBSA, seems to be the overriding narrative is that if they're new, they act like keeners, the old guys are always more chill.

I've only been called in once at the border, I was being nice and declared the 24 case of Heineken beer I had purchased @ Costco. The young agent sent me in to pay taxes.

As I was standing in the lineup his superior came up to me and said "You're in here for only this beer?" he then proceed to tell his subordinate agent off, and went ahead and sent me on my way, no taxes charged.

Avoid the young cats if you can.
