Wheel Powder coating?

Anyone know of a decent place to get this done locally that doesn't charge insane pricing? I called greens and they wanted some $240 a wheel to do a generic silver... These are winter wheels, so they don't need to be immaculate. (Wheels are 18x8, currently black with a machined lip) Thanks.

wouldn't bother with Rainbow unless he's changed his business model. Works on his own schedule, sometimes answers your calls, most times not. Make an appointment for 1pm, he is gone by 1230. Annoyed the shit out of me.

I hope he's changed by now but I don't think he cares much.

Wow I didn't know it costs that much to PC wheels. I bought a large oven that was used at a powdercoating shop but have yet to install and get it running.

Agreed! Had the same experience and it really sucks cause it took me an hour to get out there. Ended up going to Vicious Coatings. Gave me a wicked deal and did a pretty nice job on my wheels. Just make sure you get them to tape off the middle hole and the back of your wheels so you don't end up having trouble putting them on. If Surrey can do it for 30-35 a wheel though, I would give them a shot.

well I'm not here to plug my dad's business but remember, he does work for mostly metal shops and other industrial companies. personally I wouldn't take some super expensive ass wheels to him.

also with any powder coating job, make sure the stuff is as clean as possible. no plastic rivets or anything else you don't want melted. garbage in, garbage out.

I'm not looking for the best power coater around, just a dece one. Mind asking him what he would charge tmrw for a set of 18" wheels? If it is 30-40 a wheel i'd be happy to pay that.

Being ignorant isn't going to help the OP whatsoever. I'd like to hear your reasoning behind suggesting plastidip.

Back on topic, I had the same experience with Rainbow; spotty communication, and he would change his pricing on me each time I'd contact him.

if you call him up tomorrow between 8-4 he'll give you a price right away. pretty sure that's about what he'd charge given you want a common color like silver.

(sorry for resurrecting the thread)

I'm sure this might sound dumb but how do you deal with the logistics of getting the bare wheel to the people doing the powder coating? Sounds like there are some good deals here but I think the actual service would be the least of my worries. I live downtown in a condo, so I can't just put my car up on blocks in my parkade. I'd have to bring it to a friend's house, remove the wheels, remove the tires, store the tires there, borrow a car to bring the wheels to the shop, wait a while (by the sounds of it) for the guy to do the coating, then do it all in reverse.

Is there anywhere that will do it all at the shop?

whenever this question comes up the answer usually is to send it to california, where it's still legal...

i knew someone who was in your situation, but it was to repair/refinish not powdercoat. he went to volco and they put some used wheels/tires on his car while they sent his stuff to one of the repair places to get redone. i can't remember if there was a charge to borrow their stuff though.

when i was at greens long time ago they had a hoist inside the shop with a car on it. they said a customer left it there and rented something else while they worked on his wheels. again, i'm not sure of the details on how this is set up.

Sure there are shops. But don't expect a good deal, as you need to pay them now for:

Car storage
Labour for dismounting wheels form car
Labour for dismounting tires from wheels
Stripping paint from wheels
Prepping wheels
Powdercoating
Mounting tires to wheels
Mounting wheels to car

Don't know any powdercoaters who would do this, but that's the run down for any typical paint shop. (Fasttrack for example)
