Maybe if you're not confident enough to take your test in a manual, you shouldn't be driving one on a daily basis.

In all seriousness though you are actually not allowed to use a rental car for your driving test, atleast in my experience.

When I was taking my test I took it in a silver on silver toyota camry (classic rental car), and the lady asked me if it was, I said no she asked if she could see the paperwork I said sure, pulled the insurance and it was all in check so we proceeded for the test.

If you are allowed to take a rental car why did that lady ask me that time?

There is no major rental car company that will rent you a car with an N (In vancouver, atleast .. there's a few smaller ones that might i.e. ritz rent a car on robson)
You are also not allowed to use a rental car for a driving test (Once again, in the GVRD)

Source:
I work at a rental car company

Then again, if you get a parent to get you the car and the icbc examiner doesn't ask, I suppose you're in the clear.

simply because someone doesn't want to take their test in a manual doesn't mean they can't drive manual. i took my parents rav4 for my class 5 and i'd like to think i can drive stick as well as the next guy. why give them another thing to mark/critique/dock you on? don't know about the rest of you but i was nervous enough on all my driving tests

renting a car for the exam seems like overkill though. and technically speaking, no you're not allowed. don't ask don't tell though - at your own risk

OP, i leave you with this piece of advice; borrow a parents/friends/uncles/grandparents/prostitutes/??? car that is an auto for the test. No need to rent.

I drove my class 5 test with a MT car. There were a few times when I was a "demerit" because of my shifting. I was driving down a side road that has a stop sign at the end, I still shifted from 2nd to 3rd, but he told me that I should've stayed in 2nd and just kept the revs high because I was going to stop anyway. I was taken down 16th towards UBC, where the speed limit was 60 - I shifted into 5th (because I usually drive a little faster than 60), but I was told later that I should've stayed in 4th.

None of these things are that bad though. It's not like the old school system where they literally add up all the "points" on your test - so all these little minor things shouldn't make you fail a test.

things like shifting in the middle of a turn, that's just a really bad habit, you shouldn't be doing that anyway.

Mind you, I took this test 9 years ago, so maybe it's different now

i dont get why anyone failed OP for this thread... it was pretty straight forward...

anyways i borrowed a friends kia because my car is low, was loud, and standard... and im happy i did, why make the test any harder than it has to be..

anyways, as long as a vehicle has valid insurance, and when you rent the car they specify that you cannot use it for a road test i do not see why you cant

I was worried about taking it in a stick but I did it and the instructor said he was impressed that I did my test in a manual because most people don't..

Im pretty sure rental cars aren't allowed on road tests, but I could be wrong. Ask a friend to lend you their car and give them booze afterwards. Good luck on the test! It's so much easier than the N test, haha.
