20 Years of MKIV Supra

Quote:
The fourth Supra made its debut at the 1993 Chicago Auto Show. Like its competitors, it was a big coupe, but it actually managed to lose some weight compared to its dated-looking, 1980s-fantastic predecessor. This new Supra had flowing, elegant lines, a long hood, and its signature huge wing. I think that in terms of design, the Nissan 300ZX and Mazda RX-7 have aged better, but the Supra is unmistakably pretty. I always thought of it as a modern Japanese take on a Jaguar coupe.

Power famously came from the 3.0-liter JZ straight six engine in either naturally aspirated form with 220 horsepower or in twin turbocharged form with 320 horsepower. Zero to 60 mph came in just 4.6 seconds, according to Car and Driver. They said that made it faster than all its competitors. P

We now live in an age where the humble V6 Mustang puts out horsepower numbers close to that and where sub-5 second zero to 60 times don't feel all that special. But back in the early 1990s, the Supra was astoundingly fast. P

And that was before the tuners got their hands on it. Everyone has met a guy who once cranked his Supra up to 1,000, or 1,200, or 1,500, or 2,000 horsepower. The turbo six's output seems limited only by its owner's imagination and budget

The Supra and its cohorts the 300ZX, RX-7, NSX and others were the last products of the era when Japan was invincible and unstoppable. All of them were high-tech land missiles that could engage or defeat the best cars that America and Europe had to offer. The 1980s proved that Japanese cars could compete — this class of sports coupes proved they could surpass. For a generation of people raised on the import car scene, on Gran Turismo and Initial D, they remain revered like ancient, mythical gods.
Let's Celebrate The Mark IV Toyota Supra's 20th Birthday

so true...although its appearance isn't timeless unlike the RX7 or NSX, there's no denying in the potential of this platform...it surely is one of the finest Toyotas ever built along with the 2KGT and LFA. Here's to hoping its worthy successor will be out relatively soon.

The best of the last generation of Toyotas that I had respect for .... Celica was canned. MR2/MR-S was canned. Supra was canned.

I know these aren't profitable models, but they're heart and soul models.

Love the Supra, it's one of my goals to own and drive a Mk4 for a while. Made when Toyota made their best cars, man I wish they would bring this back. Not remake it, just bring out the old blueprints and remake them like they did back in the 90s.

The mid 90's was the heyday for performance Toyota vehicles. Before they decided to castrate their lineup leaving appliances to win over consumers, you had the Supra, MR2, Celica, the X-chassis RWD sedans, and the last generation of Corolla that had a 4A-G. I'm really hoping the rumored collaboration with BMW for the new Supra doesn't produce a cheapened 8-series.

Theres something about these cars that has intrigued me since i was 9 years old... some people just dont understand the obsession mk4 owners have with their cars.

whether you agree or not, it is hands down one of the most legendary cars of the 90's. Im not a fan of the overly techy performance cars now adays... seems like performance cars are just losing their souls and require less driver skill and involvement. in my opinion i think cars from the late 90's are the perfect balance of technology and old school engineering.

i can only imagen how epic the wars would have been if the r34 were available in north america at the same time and some of the big american tuners like boostlogic, titan and sp racing had a hand in aftermarket development for the r34. i love having the age old "which is superior" debate with other car guys.

design wise, i had my car redone from the ground up last year and had all the badges shaved off in the process... and people to this day ask me at red lights what kind of car it is and are dumbfounded when i tell them its a 1994. of course my opinion is bias but up until about 3-4 years ago the mk4 supra hung in there with alot of the newer cars coming out.

from its interior that wraps around the driver and makes you feel involved to its flamboyant wing... cheers to one of the most iconic performance cars of our time. events like tx2k and mile racing wouldnt be what they are today without the supra.

Not a fair comparison, this was last year of the fox body. I agree with you, but this is a bad comparison
