So.. How many people are using ART instead of Dalvik now?
I've been trying for the last few hours ever since a more permanent fix for Whatsapp was discovered today.
ART seems quite a bit smoother, especially when you hit the recents/multi-task button. It's instant responsee whereas before there used to be a slight pause. Overall the OS seems 99% stutter and lag free. The n5 was already fast out of the box, but this seems to remove any lingering stutters/dropped frames in animations OS-wide for me. Anyone successfully tethering?
I have Fido and previously could tether with an unlocked Apple store purchased iPhone 4. Using the Nexus 5 I am unable to tether to a Windows 8 PC or Android tablet via wifi, bluetooth, or USB. The devices will connect and will get an IP address, but cannot actually get data.
I wonder if it has to do with APN settings...I've also heard that Google changed the tether settings in 4.4 to allow reporting of tethering if the carrier is tracking it. Not sure if the iPhone 4 did that or not.

So again 33% while I slept.... I closed apps before putting it down.
Wifi and phone idle were really high on consumption as well as phone idle.
I checked running apps and the only thing I could see was google play services called GCMservices and googlelocationmanager popped up.....
FerrariEnzo I'm curious as to what you have turned on/off.
It's frustrating really.

You guys should try to factory reset and not install any other apps and see if the problem persists. If not, then slowly add apps back to find the culprit. No weird overnight drains here. Posted via RS Mobile |

Whats the point of changing the runtime to ART? I just leave it as Dalvik............

What the flying fuck is going on with battery life, I haven't touched my phone since I started classes this morning at 8:30, and I'm currently sitting at 80%. was 100% when I left my house at 8.

Whats the point of changing the runtime to ART? I just leave it as Dalvik............ | You can get Whatsapp to run with it quite easily now if you're rooted. People have modified the libart.so file to remove one of the checks done on startup with Whatsapp.
ART is probably the future for Android. It's quite a bit smoother than dalvik and is quite stable in its current form. The only other app I may use that it's compatible at the moment is titanium backup. Posted via RS Mobile |

Generally ART requires ODEX ROMS from what I've heard. Most Dev's DEODEX their ROMS to allow easier customizing. However the chef of Cataclysm ROM has figured out how to run ART on a DEODEX'd ROM so we'll see how it goes on his next release.

Hongy I think we have similar battery life.
I'm at almost 4hrs at 82% with 12 minutes of screen time.
I'll try factory reset when I get home and install apps one by one.
Still trying to figure out what GCMservices and googlelocationmanager exactly do.

not too sure if that will work
however, try this Quote:
I was able to work around the issue by modifying the following sqlite database (you'll need root):
/data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db
You need to add a new entry to the global table called "tether_dun_required" with a value of 0.
It looks like you need to do this because some configuration data was added to Android for T-mobile that forwards tethered data to this APN: pcweb.tmobile.com
T-mobile is probably checking to see if your account has tethering enabled when you go through this APN.
After I made this change I also needed to change my APN settings so that it uses ipv4 instead of ipv6. It seems like tethering with ipv6 does not work 100% yet.

It was included on a custom ROM for my Asus TF201, and I use it on my Nexus 5 now too. It shows you which apps are causing wakeups and how many times they have run since your last startup. It then has a tool to "hibernate" your problem apps, so that they only run when you start them up yourself.
*note this breaks functionality of any apps that push or sync on a schedule, like apps for chat, cloud scheduled syncing, weather updates, etc. Quote:

I don't think you should disable GCMservices or you won't get your push notifications. For location manager, you should try turning off Google Location Reporting or disabling Google Now if that still doesn't resolve it.
I've found that with my usage, at work (good LTE signal), I'm at 94% after 6 hours 20 mins total time and 10 mins of screen on time. On an average day, I get around 16 hours and 2 hours screen on time @ 50% battery. Stock ROM, Franco r14 kernel, full sync, Google Now on, Google Location Reporting off. Quote:

It takes A LONG TIME depending how many apps you have (took around 8-10 mins for 125 apps on mine) because it's basically "converting" them to ART. After that, any new app you install is supposed to take slightly longer and take up more space; but I haven't noticed it taking longer to install apps.

Joking aside, rooting a Nexus 5 is incredibly easy. There's a guide laid out step by step. You can do it yourself in 10 minutes.
