| A Little Issue With Fido
Last week I tried setting myself on a basic plan as I'm out of the country and don't use the phone other than for iMessage when I'm gone.
Essentially, I was under the impression that I am contracted only for voice and that I have fulfilled my contractual duties for data. My situation is best explained if I draw it out:
In March 2008, I signed a 3 year contract for a voice plan. That contract would've expired in March 2011. However, in August 2010, I upgraded to the iPhone 4 early (6 months) as I was eligible to do so. At this point, I signed another 3 year contract, this time for voice and data.
Since I had not fulfilled my first contract (6 months remaining), I'm still on the hook for those 6 months. From August 2010, I was on the hook for 3 years and 6 months. That means, I would be contract free by March 2014.
However, the way I see it, if I still have to fulfill my original contract (the one that had ONLY a VOICE obligation) I should be on the hook for 3 years of voice and data and 6 months of only voice. However, they're making me do 3 years and 6 months of both voice and data. Since August 2010, I have had voice and data on my account and fulfilled the 3 years of that contract where I agreed to sign on for voice and data. But, I still have to fulfill the first contract's 6 months which was only voice so why should I pay for data when I don't want to.
Can anyone chime in here and shed some light on this situation or perhaps share person experience with something similar.
Thank you kindly.

Correct me if I'm wrong people but when you upgrade and sign a new 3 year plan, doesn't the obligation just reset to 3 years?

Well they're fucking me over royally. They've changed my renewal date completely to make it as if I signed my contract on March of 2011 which isn't true.
I pre-ordered the iPhone 4 when it came out in 2010 and I signed and renewed my contract on 2010 August. That being said, I should have fulfilled that contract by now as it is 2013 September. I talked to a gentleman on the phone who said his computer shows 2011 March renewal and he cannot go back to my 2010 August bill to see the renewal done on that date.
I even tried to spell it out for him and say that "I received an iPhone 4 @ a subsidized price in August of 2010, doesn't that mean I renewed my contract on August of 2010!?"
He responded with a "Yes, but my computer is showing me 2011 of March..."
This is a very frustrating situation as they're keeping me on the hook for the next 4-5 months when I shouldn't be.

I could be wrong but I recall that Fido is one company that allows stacking of contracts. Posted via RS Mobile |

I'm okay with stacking of contracts, but if I am to carry out the obligation of my original contract still it needs to be on those terms. That was a contract voice only and I've had data ever since I signed my new 3 year in 2010. Therefore, I have fulfilled that portion and I should only be on the hook for voice that is stacked.
Either way, I had them look into it deeper and about half an hour later on the phone, they realized that they messed up on the computer and inputed my data in wrong and corrected it.
I am now contract free.
Still, an absolute scumbag move on their part trying to get customers to be obligated to a 3 year 6 month voice and data contract by claiming they're stacking the 2 contracts but in reality they're changing the terms and conditions and stacking them at the same time.

I ran into a similar issue just couple weeks ago.
Original contract: Aug 2010 - Aug 2013 on ip4 $62 plan including $27 credits ($89 otherwise)
Stacked contract: renewed Sept 2012 - Aug 2015 on ip5 $57 plan including $32 credits ($89 otherwise - same plan as above)
Aug 2013 (now): $20 of my $32 cedits "expired". Apparently they renew the "plan" but do not renew the "credits" to match my timeline until 2015. This is very misleading. Basically my 3-year $57 contract is now $77 a month. I complained and call bullshit for about an hour. At the end I had to negotiate my plan and cut my data in half. Now my plan with less features is $50 a month until Aug 2015.

How long are you gone for? See if they offer a vacation plan which is $15 a month with telus. The services on the phone remain inactive, and you just pay $15 a month. It also doesn't extend your contract by the amount of time you are on this vacation plan. Posted via RS Mobile |

Posted via RS Mobile | I live in the U.S. and only keep that line active so that I keep my long standing with Fido (account active since 2002) and so that I can keep my phone number.
I come back in the summer months and use the phone to the fullest during May, June, July and August but until then, it gets minimal usage.
The $15 suspension is a good option but they also have an option for $15/50 minutes 100 text messages which is a much better option. I've been on it before and after a little digging, they were able to put me back on it. The only thing is, the used to make me put on a data option for $10 which made my bill come out to $27.00 with taxes a month for a line I don't use (but active.)
Now, I'll get to cancel that $10 data option and keep the $15/month option. Best of both worlds! |

Scumbags. Posted via RS Mobile | That's fault on your part for making the assumption. When I was with Fido, and had to negotiate a new plan, they explicitly said that the credits would only be valid for a year. None of the credits last for the entire duration of the contract. It's your responsibility to call in again before your existing credits expire to renegotiate a new plan.

So I said yes. Posted via RS Mobile |

If I recall, the new rules were only announced earlier this year while the actual rules don't come into play until the end of the year.

^^ yup. That's why they are trying to lock everyone in now before the new rules come into effect.
I am riding my contract out and never signing another one - rather buy outright and unlocked. The plans are all jacked up now because people didn't want to be liable for a contract they agreed with.

In a way I find it pretty funny and I wonder how many of those people who bitched about the 3 year terms come to regret what the outcome would be.
Personally, I've never had issues with 3 year contracts. I've been with Rogers my entire life, don't plan to switch anytime soon if not ever. Sign 3 years, get newest and greatest phones for cheap, get a retention plan close to the end of my term and resign another 3 years while still getting a new and awesome phone for cheap and repeat.

i email the president of the fido last month in regards to one of their phone rep acting very unprofessional and hang up on me before i can talk to her manager. so fido gave me a month of free service for free. the email is on their website. it will first ask if you can resolve it with a manager. but it's worth it. some of their phone rep is pretty unprofessional.
