If you like the fish cakes they have at Fujiya, these will be better, 'cause salmon is always tastier than the white fish meat they use.

I like my fish cakes sweet. You can make them salty or even make them spicy.

Father son fishing meet?

My preferred salmon, next to sockeye is red spring. Cohoe, too if you smoke and can them right after.

I like chum, but only for its roe. Chum salmon roe fetches huge dollars in Japan. Most people don't know how to salt them properly........... anyway, I just happened to notice this thread. Sorry for the intrusion.......... back to VOT.

Sorry, unllike your grandfather, I suck when it comes to fishing. Especially with a fishing rod. My fahter was so glad when he found out I hated fishing. Life as a fisherman sucked and that's not the kind of life he wanted for his son.

Grandfather, father, son meet?

But seriously, I suck too, and I not sure what to do when I catch a fish. Kill humanely, clean on spot? etc.

News flash........ your grandfather is dead. He'd be around 103 if he were still alive.

I will share with you pictures of your grandfather's 45 foot gilnetter one day.

Oh, club it over the head. A nice sharp blow to the head.

knife between the eyes or smack it in the head with a rock/stick

throw it in a cooler with ice after gutting.

Gut and chuck stuff back into water?

Sorry for noob questions, but I guess they could be helpful for anyone else that is new and wants to get started in fishing.

Now to work on casting, sometimes my line gets tangled on spool :(

T4RAWR 09-10-2013 06:18 PM

toss it back in the water or keep it for bait in crab traps.

Go to fishingwithrod.com or any bait/tackle shop, they will set you up.

If anyone wants a free salmon tag, PM me. Walmart screwed up, had to re-issue me a license and gave my old one back so I have a spare which came off quite easily.

i would try some pink spoons as well as a few crocs, cant hurt to switch things up once in a while to see the types of reactions you get.

iirc nikka in steveston sells a 4 pack of white striped pink spoons for 7.99 bucks or something.

Sockeye, coho and springs don't need to be put on ice right away. I usually just kill it and bleed it and leave it in the water until I leave. Pinks are a different story though. I find if you don't put it on ice right away the quality of the meat degrades a lot quicker than the other fish.

The longer you leave any dead salmon in water the faster the meat gets all mushy.
