Explain it like you're 5? That could be tough without raising other questions, but I'll try...

Let's say you're a lawyer studying a case with thousands of pages of documents. Your desk (processor registers) can only hold 4 pages at a time to read. When you want to look at another page you need to remove one of the 4, put it back in the filing cabinet (RAM or hard drive) and dig up another one. Now imagine your desk can hold 8 pages at once (going from 32 to 64 bit). You're still going to have to make a trip back to the filing cabinet for other pages, but you can work on twice as many at the same time (get more work done).

If you saw the A7 slide from the keynote you'll notice they mentioned "2X the registers and 2X the floating point registers". Registers are memory locations in the processor that are the temporary working area the CPU uses (or directly acts on). It is the fastest of all memory. After registers comes the different levels of cache (L1, L2...) and finally RAM. Moving to 64 bit basically doubles the registers (though this is not always the case with all processor designs).

A problem you could have is if your mind works in such a way that you can only read a single page at a time. On your smaller desk it means spots for 3 pages aren't being utilized while on your bigger desk you're wasting 7 spots (this is a gross over-simplification, but I think you get the idea).

So if your software isn't coded properly to take advantage then there's no benefit, and often a drawback (performance/memory penalty). To get maximum benefits will require you to make some modifications to your code to optimize for the additional registers. Or take the easy way out and flip the "64 Bit" switch in the compiler and let it do everything for you.

what kind of real life applications on a phone is this useful for?
I just call, text, internet, take pictures and enter 4 digit pins. Is it for gaming or something?

I've been an iPhone user since the 3G. I just finished watching the keynote and I can't say I'm impressed. I know it's an "S" phone so it was a given that the phone would look very similar if not the same as the previous phone, but I dunno, I really wanting to be "wowed" by the 5s.

I'm probably going to get shot in this thread for saying this, but for once in my life I'm actually considering making the switch to Android (for the Xperia Z1) but iOS7 looks so drop dead gorgeous I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Now I know who to ignore for tech news. There are a lot of benefits to having a 64 bit processor, and only one of them is being able to address over 4GB of memory.

I wonder if any of these writers has ever seen a Sun or SGI workstation with a true 64 bit processor (not one of those 32/64 bit hybrids) running on 256, 64 or even 16MB of RAM? Perhaps they should go back in time and tell everyone using them how useless their systems are since they can't access 4GB of RAM.

The bottom line is the A7 is 2X as fast (CPU/GPU) as the A6 while still fitting in the same space and giving the same battery life. That's quite the accomplishment. The fact Apple custom designed this chip (instead of using a reference ARM design like most others do) is even more impressive. Looks like those PA Semi and Intrinsity acquisitions are really paying off.
It's pretty interesting that the one huge change is being ignored, with everyone focusing on the cheap ugly plastic phones and relatively useless fingerprint sensor. Does anyone else even have an ARMv8? I don't think so

I think this shows that most people don't really care about performance - everything is pretty much 'caught up' in the iphone's price range by now anyway.. If you buy an $800 (or "$200") phone then you know it'll be fast enough. For some power users this is good, and for tech people it's downright impressive. But for most end users, I think they would have liked to see a bigger screen and better battery life instead.

Because truthfully, having "more registers" means nothing to the end user. Sure, PvZ2 levels will load much faster, and there is much more potential for multitasking. But it's not a multitasking device. This will mean a lot more on tablets, and hopefully IOS7 isn't all about looks because they need do to a lot more to make it as useful as Windows tablets. As much as they suck now, they are certainly more suited to doing tasks rather than goofing around with Smurfville and watching videos on an ipad.

Maybe the 64 bit SOC will make it a multitasking device, but then you have the issue of segmentation, something Apple tried so hard to avoid in the past. It got really bad with the introduction of the iphone 4, but now you have two completely different products pretty much.

Somewhat in the same boat, bought into the whole apple thing (mbp, mba, ipads, touch, phones, padminis etc) and am somewhat disappointed that there is no feature that I was hoping for (better battery life, 128gb). ios7 is slick and I will prolly enjoy it on my 4s,padmini,pad,touch etc but I'm going to try the Note 3 to see if Android is my thing.

Just notice that both the 5c and 5s sold in HK and China now support China Mobile's LTE network! I could finally say good bye to GPRS when I'm in China! This is probably the best feature of the new iPhones that for me is a must!

I am utterly amazed that 16GB is still the baseline model. Ram prices are so cheap, why not roll out 32/64/128 and make yourself a market differentiator?

The "affordable" 5C was made for emerging smart phone markets such as China but the 5C in China cost more then the 5S is North America. And they make the phone LOL

so far... iOS 7 Beta Gold Master:

-very stable
-rbc app used to crash on previous beta, it does not any more
-twitter feeds when loaded in safari used to crash, it does not any more
-refreshing new ringtones
-nice new wallpapers
-very smooth and fast on iPhone5
-Messaging use to crash, it does not any more
-auto updating of apps is great.

*not sure if the dynamic funky wallpapers suck up more battery life due to their animated nature... will test that today.

as an experiment, when I updated to GM.. I tried to restore in iTunes and it would not let me...even if I pulled out my sim... great new security feature finally - you need your OWN iTunes password to restore the phone. Thieves are screwed!

minor rants:
-why no unlock sound when you enter your unlock code at lock screen?
-battery charging indicator still does not flash.. it is a constant charge symbol EVEN if it is fully charged.

Anyone know if the ios7 podcast app supports password protected mp3 downloads? itunes does, and the old version did, but the current one doesn't as far as I can tell.

Maybe not, but the ones you see created by a GoPro are the ones you're more than likely wanting to see.

if someone is willing to pay $600 for the 16gb phone, why would apple bring a 32gb baseline model phone?

i wouldn't be surprised apple eventually lower the iphone 5c prices from $600 to somewhere between $400-500. the initial apple fans will always pay higher prices for whatever product apple sells.

Very disappointed in Apple. It used to be a leader, now... not even sure it's a follower.

There is still so much that mobile market can innovate still since users like me still encounter tons of limitation on my devices on a daily basis.

Too bad Apple lost a great visionary as Jobs. And Cook seems to only follow numbers.

IMHO, they should hire some really great minds like Elon Musk to lead the company.

I'm one of the few who really likes the finger print unlock. I don't use a passcode. I had an awesome Cydia tweak long ago though that doesn't require passcode a when connected to your home wifi. I wish apple would have implemented that.

Other than that I see no reason to upgrade from my 5...although my contract is up this week...hmmmm
