New Police Motorcycles

Quote:
A dozen new Harley Davidson Electra Glides bought for the Vancouver Police Department's traffic section were put on display Monday.

The motorcycle retails at a starting price of about $25,000 a bike. The air-cooled, twin-cam engine with an integrated oil cooler is 1,690 c.c. in size.

The bike can hit speeds of 170 km/h. VPD has 44 traffic cops on motorcycles working on speed enforcement, counter attacks, traffic control and enforcing distracted driving offences such as cellphone use.

The bikes will have a distinctive vintage photo of biker cops from the early days of the force on the back hatch of the motorcycle to show the rich heritage of the motorcycle unit. The solid Electra Glide is built for quick acceleration and smooth handling and stability on city roads and highways.

We are way too traffic cop heavy as is, $25k a pop - as a tax payer, I'm not impressed. $300k... That's a lot of money.

would you rather them drive fully equipped chargers, which cost more than 25 a pop? it's actually cheaper this way.

VPD only ride in the spring/summer or year round? Huge factor on its cost effectiveness.

This is why they need to hand out so many of those excessive speeding tickets...

Harley's shouldn't be cop bikes. They're too damn slow for chase vehicles. Mind you, considering the shitty traffic jam Vancouver has, I guess speed isn't that big of a factor.

Should have gone with an R1 instead.

I don't know why VPD bought Harley...those bikes are expensive, slow, unreliable, heavy, won't handle very well and it just does NOT seem like a logical choice.

Yup it's called Marine Way. Where the speed limit (between Victoria & Boundary) somehow is still only 50km/h.

We need less wombles on bikes giving out stupid tickets for people driving, say 70 along sw marine, a 3 lane road with no house exiting onto it

We have it all wrong in this city, there shouldn't be a constant fight between people wanting to act 'normally' and the road police just because our limits are too low, roads not good enough, and drivers not educated enough

Nowhere else has limits as low as here in the western world,

That's one area. And excessive speeders are caught the majority of the time via laser, not following and pacing another vehicle on a bike. Traffic cops get most of their offences via traps. Not chasing people down.

does Benz have some sort of affiliate with a motor bike co? maybe they could've gotten a group deal?

I recently met a full patch member while vacationing at a resort. We ended up spending quite a bit of time together (nicest, but one of the scariest looking dudes you would ever meet - taught me to never judge a book by its cover) as his wife and mine got along real well after some drinks at the swim up bar. Turns out he and I got along real well also. He was saying that if he could get away with it, he'd ride a Honda for the reliability. As would other members of his chapter. They simply can't. Have to roll a Harley.
