anyone went to whistler the past few days?
thinking of going this weekend...

also, do you NEED winter tires to get up there? (driving a rental with all seasons)

v_tec 12-28-2013 02:43 AM

What's the cheapest way to just get a one-use ticket to any of the local mountains? Craigslist from Cypress employees, etc?

XplicitLuder 12-28-2013 06:12 AM

I haven't checked Craigslist prices but if you or someone you know has a BCAA you can get it through them for 25% off. A full day pass turnabout to be about the same price as if you owned a gold card at cypress. But this way you don't have to own a gold card.

At Whistler right now, the roads were clear when we drove out here last night, two of our group's cars were on all seasons and had no trouble. Not sure how the conditions on the slopes are but it's not looking as good as I'd hope.

Yea... I am pretty sure all season is fine going up whistler
But I was told there are often roadblock setup to check for snowtire and they will turn your vehicle back if you don't have snowtire (even if the road is clear)

sometimes there are. When you rent your car you can ask for a car with snowtires, usually its $5-$10/day extra (Budget car rental usually has snowies on a few cars)

I've been going back and forth to whistler for a few years now, I haven't run into a roadblock yet. I usually head up there on M+S tires (all season, not winter) and I'm fine ... i do keep chains in my trunk just in case, but to be honest I only have them so they don't tell me to turn around and GTFO

A couple years ago I made it to whistler in the middle of a snowstorm in a rental FWD Kia Rondo with shitty all seasons -- I didn't get stuck until I was pulling into my hotel

westopher 12-28-2013 09:38 PM

Well, took my roof rack off my car today. Looks like the 2-3 days a week I planned to spend at seymour aren't going to happen until at LEAST late january unless there is some sort of fucking miracle. Fuckitty fuck fuck.

anyone here have experience driving a rear wheel drive with snow tires going to Big White? since the snow conditions look ugly in the usual mountains im thinking of an alternative.

A few sections where it's fairly steep with a S curve

Load extra weight in the rear and have a few people ready to push and you should be ok if there is a lot of snow

I've been a few times and usually it was plowed....had a few times where it wasn't and I would have gotten stuck without 4wd

saveth 01-02-2014 05:24 PM

the resorts in bc usually do a really good job plowing the roads in and out of the mountains.

I just drove into whistler earlier and it was snowing pretty hard. They expect about 17cm of snow and blue skys tommorow, so tommorow should be an awesome day.

saveth 01-03-2014 02:07 PM

Today was good until about too and the lower half of the mountain (if open) was getting a little icy. Tommorow should be a decent day if you know where to go.

The only downside was it was quite busy today from 10-2. So tommorow should be about the same if not worse. If anyone is going to be here tommorow I'll do a late morning update to let you know where the snow is really nice. If not then I wont

im going whistler tomorrow and staying for 2 nights. Please, oh please let the snow hold...

AstulzerRZD 01-03-2014 06:25 PM

Has anyone here been to Mt. Baker down in the States? Their snow base looks pretty big

saveth 01-03-2014 07:11 PM

The snow should be decent in the upper portion of the mountain. I can hear the snow guns working just outside my hotel on lower blackcomb when I'm outside. Earlier today was ideal conditions in the morning. when I wake up in the morning I'm going to walk out to the run just outside and see if I want to ride tommorow or just drive home.

last time i remember it was only $86 or something

saveth 01-04-2014 02:52 PM

2 new lifts, 1 new price.

I wouldn't bother until at least Wednesday. There seems to be a nice system rolling in Tuesday night to Saturday so far on the snow-forecast site. If nothing drastically changes on this report, I can see Cypress fully opening by the weekend.

westopher 01-05-2014 07:04 PM

fingers crossed for the system to stay as strong as it is. It looks to carry over a meter coming for baker. Unfortunately I work on the weekend, but hopefully it hits strong and I can ride some pow on wednesday.
Also my wife and best friend booked me a trip to big white January 28-29th. Looking forward to getting into some cold interior pow. They have had an ok season so far so pretty stoked.

Marshall Placid 01-05-2014 07:55 PM

Went to Whistler Friday to Sunday.

Sunny for all 3 days, with 86cm at base, no new snow.

Still OKAY though.

Will post pics soon in the 2014 whip thread.
