China Visa process different?

Have applied for China visas in the past before when it was still at the old location above Staples. Form was simple to fill out and always just put 'HOTEL' for contact info/address on the form.

Recently went to the new visa center at 999 Broadway and now require proof of round trip ticket and confirmed accommodation. Is this necessary?

Relatives planning a trip but haven't bought tickets or even looked at accommodation. Is it possible to apply for visa first without the above info?

Any advice would be great.

TIA

I just did it and that info wasn't required. They also got rid of the multi entry so I have to pay a lot more...

I just got my china visa too in mid november.
Funny thing is my dad went with my aunt to get hers and the rep asked if she would be staying overnight and to provide hotel info. Told her no, it would be just one day and return hk same night, rep asked her to write on a piece of paper in chinese stating that. 4-5 days later, she received her visa and the decal said limit of days allowed to stay was 30days.
Wtf? Then whats the point of writing the paper? Could've just lied about it...

Few days later, my wife and I applied and figured to have that paper written anyways... Same thing happened, no questions asked cause we were prepared, and received a 30days stay even though we applied for a single day entry.

Prices went up too... Additional $30 service charge on top of usual price.
