Despite the memory and screen that is some beastly specs for an entry-level tablet...guess they had to use the overproduced Tegra chips somehow
So at $30 cheaper than a 2nd gen Nexus 7 and with better hardware and new stylus input, there's no longer a reason to buy a Nexus 7? I find even on my 10" tablet, true 1080p displays and higher aren't absolutely required.
Damn...I just bought a Dell Venue 8 Pro 64GB tablet for $350 and kind of regret it. I thought a larger 8" device and running full version Windows 8.1 (not crippled RT) would compliment my Nexus 5 phone better than a 7" Android tablet. However from one review posted yesterday it seems like desktop Windows 8.1 is difficult to navigate and use on an 8" touch device and the Windows Metro app store is a ghost town.
nexus 7 FHD is a better long term investment from the software alone
this only has 720p screen, 1GB Ram, no NFC, heavier and thicker form factor in return you get a high end processor, micro HDMI, microSD slot, front speakers and stylus. For me, 1GB ram is a deal breaker.
but yeah if you already own N5 then this is probably a nice tab to compliment your phone if gaming and note taking/ casual drawing is your priority.
reviews are pretty favourable in the areas of the passive stylus and overall performance...weakness being build quality and camera performance (expected for $199 1st gen product)
battery life: HD video 10 hours...browsing 8 hours...gaming 5 hours. Mod usage = 1.5 day

I'm of a weird mindset where I think a complimentary device should provide you with additional capabilities your phone can't. In the case of a 5" android powered Nexus 5, a 7" android tablet seems to add little benefit. I'd want a display that feels significantly larger (8" minimum), and a different OS that can do things Android can't.
I actually liked having an iPhone 4 with a 10" android tablet. Each can run OS specific apps the other can't. I just found 10" tablets too large for use outside of home, and Android is a better phone platform than iOS.
Maybe if my Windows 8.1 Dell Venue 8 Pro doesn't work out, I'll compliment my Nexus 5 with an iPad Mini.

I'm doing the exact same thing. Went from iphone4s + tf101 to N5 + ipad mini.
It doesnt make sense to me to have a tablet and phone of the same OS since they're both the exact same thing.
I can understand why 5" to 7" can feel redundant
I can also understand why one would want a different OS on a tab vs their phone...a carrier-subsidized iphone and an affordable android tablet would be a cost-effective combo
I think the fact that there's a tablet with stylus for $199 is nice as the galaxy note 8 is almost $400
may be next year when I'm upgrading my phone I'll just look into the padphone
