| Bored? Need to waste some time? Flightradar24.com - Live flight tracker!
Live tracking of all the planes in the air around the world. Kinda interesting to see the various flight paths and destinations of the different planes flying around. I'm currently tracking an 777 flying out of Shanghai headed to New York. It's over top the Arctic right now and seems to have changed direction rather violently. Vaguely curious about what's going on with it lol

Anything outside of the continental us is based on flight plan as filed.
Polar flights will be crooked as the map does not compensate for the curvature of the earth. So the software will just zigzag the plane sideways until it reaches flight path to head south.

Good point. I keep forgetting how much a flat map differs from an actual globe |

I'm surprised at the relatively low levels of air traffic in the Asia Pacific given the popluation density there
I guess it is like early morning there right now.
there's like only a handful of aircrafts over Africa right now |

Typhoon Usagi (Japanese word for Rabbit) may also impact the number of flights to southern China. -bad idea to fly planes towards typhoons winds that are over 175km/h.

Wow, the states sure does get lots of traffic.
I was looking at LA and SF. It's like looking at a bunch of ants running around.

Quick question, Why do planes from vancouver fly up towards alaska and back down to hongkong? Is it faster than directly over the Pacific ocean or do they do it because its more safe?

I think they tend to stick close to land for emergency purposes.

correct me if i'm wrong | Yeah its called great circle route/navigation or something like that. Its actually the shortest distance from HK to van because of the spherical shape of the Earth.

A globe will help with the perspective of going up and over (shorter) rather than across the ocean. Posted via RS Mobile |
