After the beginning shit show once MMA established itself in the late 90s, you had guys who were good strikers on top. then BJJ became the weapon to defeat strikers. then top control wrestling started to nullify the BJJ. then you had wrestlers who learned striking and were able to use their wrestling to keep the fight standing. then you started to see the true MMA fighters who trained all aspects of MMA and most fighters today are fairly well rounded. But now we're seeing an even higher level of striking coming back into MMA.
It was a one sided fight where Cody toyed with Dom and taunted him the whole time. That's pretty damn humiliating, especially with all the shit talk that was going on between them.
now begs the question....if GSP was to make a return, do u think he is well rounded enough to take on some of the current top end talent in the UFC?
I love GSP, and I still think he can out-athlete a lot of guys in the division with his wrestling and take downs, but unfortunately I think the top dogs at this point would give him a lot of issues.
Can you imagine him fighting a guy like Larkin? Yikes.
Incase anyone didnt think there were enough interim belts out there... Ferguson vs Khababibi at 209 will be for the interim LW belt. announced exactly 2 months after the belt was fought for.
lets play along:
FW: theres like 3 fucking belts going around here
Aldo has the belt forever
Conor vs Mendes for interim belt
Conor unifies interim belt with real belt by beating Aldo (only one that makes sense here)
Aldo beats Frankie for interim belt
Conor stripped of belt less than a year after winning it.
Aldo magically upgraded to the full belt without fighting for it as per usual
Holloway vs Pettis for interim belt #2
LW:
Conor beats Eddie for the belt
2 months later, they announce Ferguson vs Khabib winner for the interim belt
LHW: what an actual shit show. we all know JJ is still the champ and until they fight again DC is the interim champ.
JJ beats DC to retain belt
JJ has the belt but is stripped
DC beat Rumble for the interim belt, later promoted to the full belt
DC vs JJ for the belt, DC gets injured
JJ beats OSP and since DC is injured they give him the interim belt
DC and JJ to fight again to unify
JJ stripped of interim belt for usada
Meanwhile Cain Velasquez fought like 3 times in 8 years and wasnt stripped.
ben rothwell just tweeted "Dear @danawhite, there must be an interim title at stake between McGregor&Mayweather, otherwise I just don't find it interesting enough.Thanx"
It really saddens me that Goldie, who is arguably one of the most well known figures of UFC get 'regular' seats after he was ousted. I still remember how Vince McMahon had offered to pay him 6 figures to no-show a PPV and the first thing he did was call up Dana about it.
