Rory MacDonald is looking to undergo a complete gimmick overhaul ahead of his anticipated UFC title shot in 2015.
The Canadian welterweight...... recently changed his hairstyle to a Mohawk, according to MMAFighting.com's Ariel Helwani,
Helwani also revealed that MacDonald also changed his nickname from ‘Ares' to the ‘Red King.'
Some fans may see the nickname and immediately register the Red King character from the Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass books, or the Marvel Comics character that appeared in the ‘Incredible Hulk.'
Rory was dubbed ‘Red King' by Kajan Johnson, a fellow British Columbia native who trains with MacDonald at the Tristar Gym in Montreal. It appears that the name Rory is an Irish/Gaelic name that means Red King.
I doubt they'll have to fight each other, it'll just be whoever has the most heat coming out of their fights. We all hope it's Rory, but Matt Brown would be good too.
He was on Joe Rogan's podcast a while ago. Im a fan of Joe Rogan, and I want to be a fan of Rory. But he's got the personality of a pile of dry towels. Joe is usually pretty good at getting guests talking, but nearly everything he said, Rory would reply something like "...yeah... heh... yea I guess it is" I cant even remember most of it.
His changing gimmick doesnt bug me too much. Hes still young trying to figure out what he wants to be. Hes trying to figure out his brand, and its better that he gets one now, than after he gets huge if he wins the title. Unfortunately this gimmick might be a way to mma-cliche.
He already had a gimmick, and could have run with it. Instead he keeps trying to change it, and it comes off as kind of like he's trying too hard to be cool. If he was going to change his name, it should have been to Canadian Psycho and just run with that.
I listened to that interview too, and it was just pretty boring. There were a few moments where the weirdness came through, where you see why people think this guy is nuts. Again, I think he should just play up on that and go with the flow.
