Fongo...free mobile calling using your data???

Did a search and found no dedicated Fongo thread.

I just heard about this, and it seems this is a free VOIP calling service where they issue you a Canadian phone number. You can call or receive calls for free to select Canadian cities (seems like all Vancouver numbers will be free?). All you need is wifi or mobile data. They also offer number porting for $25.

This seems too good to be true. Can I port my Fido number to Fongo, cancel my Fido voice plan, then go to Japan and, with data access, make calls to Vancouver phone numbers for free? And on caller ID, it will show as my old Fido phone number calling them?

Fongo used to be Dell Voice or something like that. Yes if you port your number to them it will become your caller id. I've used it a couple times and it seems to work OK.

I have fongo as well and have used them to get free VM. I've only used them to get to make calls back to Vancouver from the states. Though call quality leaves a lot to be desired, it works okay.

the delay in harash... I was at the bell store and got the tablet plan for my N4.. tried the voice calling using Fongo...

Called my friend who was standing outside... 1-2sec after he started talking is when I get sound... at first I thought it was fine, I dont use voice much anyways.. but after a few weeks when I had an important call to make.. haha I found out just how bad it was...

You could probably setup something like a VOIP account with a provider. I think freephoneline.ca gives you a dedicated number as well and since it's VOIP quality and delay should be much better. There's also the initial 1 time cost of unlocking the SIP settings which is around $50. A better alternative for sure if you don't mind the initial setup cost.

EDIT. Scratch that.. appears freephoneline.ca is powered by Fongo.. LOL

oh well...guess I'll stick with Line voice chat.

I'm wondering if Fongo would be the cheapest way to keep my Canadian phone number while I move overseas. $25 to port it to Fongo, ~$25 to port it back to another mobile carrier a year from now when I move back?

I think the cheapest Fido monthly plan I can get to keep it is $10.

Viber is great for voice calling, but not to land lines, recipient has to have viber as well.

I've been using Freephoneline.ca (owned by Fongo) on an Linkysts ATA device as my home phone for the last 3-4 years. I pay ZERO monthly fees, and the voice quality is just as good as landline.

I think I read 7-11 prepaid is $60/year plus a start up cost. Don't know of anything else yet. Maybe I should post a separate thread with this question.
