I recently came back from LAX on Air Canada's "Rouge" service. I normally prefer AC over UA and Westjet etc because of the E90's 2x2 seating configuration. AC has since removed the E90 on to other routes and replaced it with the Airbus 319.

Not sure how many of you have flown on Rouge service routes, but it's mostly a 3x3 seating config and pretty bare bones with no entertainment (if that matters to you.)

They offer an in-flight WiFi service where you log into their wifi network on your phone, laptop, or tablet device then stream content from there. Kind of neat, I suppose. Make sure you bring headphones and that your device is fully charged! There are no USB or power outlets for you to use. If you want to watch the movies and don't have a device, iPads can be rented for $10, but most of their flights are < 4 hours or so, so it's not a big deal.

One thing that is different is that the service staff are much younger and upbeat so it was refreshing. I wasn't sure what to think of it during my first flight but on the return trip home, it was great. You can really see them going out of their way to make passengers happy.

Oh, and just a pro-tip - LAX Terminal 2 is undergoing some renovations or repairs so it can be a bit noisy and an eye sore if that matters to any of you.

I got thrown to the back of the plane unfortunately so c'est la vie (no big deal, really.) Here's a quick shot of what the seats look like.
Spoiler!

I was thrown onto a Rouge economy flight from Anchorage to YVR immediately after a 10 hour flight by my company. Honestly, it was the most brutal 3.5 hours I have ever been in an airplane. Seat pitch sucked, even for my relatively shorter 5'-7" figure I could not fit properly in the seat - nevermind the general North American 6'-0"+ person. Seats were thin as hell, meaning you felt every move of the person behind you trying to squeeze into his/her seat.

Washrooms were dirty as hell by mid-flight, even by low-cost standards.

On the plus side media streaming was actually quite nice, they had a full season of Parks and Rec on, which made the time pass a bit better - NOTE: CONTENT STREAMING IS ONLY FREE DURING CERTAIN MONTHS/TIMES, AND WILL NOT WORK ON ANDROID BROWSERS (APP IS REQ'D UNLIKE iPADS)

I arrived in Mumbai about 1.5 weeks ago, new terminal is fantastic - very beautiful. But yes, it is ridiculously disorganized with people and PAPERWORK EVERYWHERE. I don't know if it was only because I was coming in as part of a crew... but there were so many different forms to fill in and pass around it felt like I was getting indoc'd at a prison.

All Indian airports are brutal and chaotic. It's every man/woman for themselves.

And sad that Jet Airways has gone down the tube. I flew Jet Airways from YYZ/LHR/BOM a few years ago, the service was superb and the plane (773) was spotless. I guess service decreases when another airline (Eithad) buys a stake and wants to turn a profit. It would have been nice to have one Indian international carrier that stood out on the global stage as a quality airline but I guess all hope is lost.

Got back last night from my Paris trip I booked in April and what a f'ing nightmare. Here's a breakdown of my adventures with AC from last Monday to last night:

-Flight from SEA to YYC is delayed. I miss the connection to YUL even though AC employees tell me I'll make the flight.
-YYC - YUL was the last flight so I missed my connection to Paris.
-I have to wait around for an hour while AC tries to find another flight for me but everything is booked.
-I'm told I'll make Paris but it'll be around 11pm instead of my original time of 8:30am.
-I'm told to collect my bag so they could recheck it for my new flight.
-My bag goes missing at YYC, it's not even scanned.
-I bitch about my been bumped and my bag been lost. I'm asked by a manager "do you want VIP treatment or something?"
-I'm now routed from Calgary/Frankfurt/Paris. I have a 9 hour layover in Frankfurt. I'm told by the AC booking agent that I can spend all 9 hours at the lounge because I'm traveling J. Thanks for the great advice.
-My bag is still missing as I board my flight to Frankfurt.
-Arrive in Frankfurt and still no bag.
-AC tells me it's Lufthansa responsible now because the last leg of my journey ends with them.
-Lufthansa booking from Frankfurt to Paris can't be found for me, my wifes booking is fine. My bag is still missing and not scanned. No idea where it is.
-Lufthansa finds a booking but it's for a doctor which has the same last name for me.
-AC issues me a PAPER TICKET, Lufthansa agent can't stop laughing at the paper ticket and calls AC "the worst airliner ever" and employees who are stuck in the 80's.
-Lufthansa agent finally finds my booking but I'm booked on a earlier flight. Agent gets pissed and calls AC, asks the AC employee if he knew what the answer to 2+2 was. Hangs up on the phone mid-sentence and basically rebooks me with my wife.
-Can't handle this shit so I head out to downtown Frankfurt via train for a few hours.
-Finally arrive in Paris, still no bag. Wait another 45 minutes at the missing bag area at CDG, it's now almost 12am. Been up for over 24 hours.
-My bag finally arrives 4 days later at my hotel, it's fucking WET and it was tagged for a WESTJET flight to YYZ.

Worst service I've ever experienced. On top of all this, I was told that I needed to e-mail (not call) customer support for customer complaints and it might take up to 15 business days for a reply.

That sounds awful!

Did you book your trip on a credit card with travel insurance?

Lucky I did. I'm claiming some stuff on my Amex card, almost claiming via Lufthansa. The return trip was much better, the service from YYZ - YVR on J was incredible. The amount of food provided was a bit shocking for a 4+ flight.

Here's some quick shots from my trip;

Breakfast was pretty good;

Frankfurt, weather was awful:

Hotel I stayed in Paris, incredible;

Hotel I stayed in Monaco, Le Hermitage;

Took the heli from Nice to Monaco and back;

AC lounge in Paris, it was god awful;

Heading back home;

Malaysia Airlines to Cut Work 6000 jobs in $2 Billion Bailout

Following two of the worst air tragedies in recent years, the shadow cast over Malaysia Airlines is growing ever darker.

Malaysia Airlines will cut 6,000 jobs, or about 30 percent of its work force, and receive a bailout from the Malaysian government amounting to nearly $2 billion, according to a restructuring plan announced.

Malaysia Airlines is rumoured to be ready to replace its chief executive as part of a major overhaul, and is expected to announce this week its earnings for the period between the disappearance of MH370 in March and the downing of MH17 over Ukraine in July.

On Thursday, Malaysia Airlines reported in an earnings statement that it had lost $97.6 million in the quarter ended in June — the first financial period to show the effects of the Flight 370 disappearance.

Saddled with more than $4 billion in debt and cumulative financial losses of about $1.7 billion since 2011, the airline has been increasingly squeezed in recent years by competition from nimbler, low-cost rivals in the region, including AirAsia, founded by the Malaysian billionaire Tony Fernandes. Budget carriers now represent almost 60 percent of the air travel market in Southeast Asia, according to the Center for Asia Pacific Aviation in Sydney, Australia.
