Personally I like the short period when M went a little bonkers with the F1 technology transfer to road car, namely the V10 M5/M6 and the V8 M3. 507hp and top speed of 340km/h was big numbers when F430 had only 495hp and couldn't break 200mphs, the Gallardo which had a 5.0L V10 at the time only made 490hp and wouldn't able to match it in a top speed sprint.

The M3 GTS was the highest point in that respect. Just because it got heavier didn't mean it was less raw and pure contrary to what many people like to suggest. 3200lb and 450hp from a V8 that rev to 8400rpm is maddening and addictive.

I agree though, M really ended it for me when they went full turbos and awd. The X5M/X6M was the beginning of the end, although I do respect them after experiencing first hand how capable they are, and in many real life situation would demolish many older M cars...
I am waiting to drive the new m4 to determine if the brand has gone to total crap.....would you rather have a 2012 991 or a new m4?

I would much rather have a 991. Nothing from the BMW range interest me anymore as of right now sad to say. My friend moved from the E92 M3 to the 997 GT3 RS recently and it seems like the right step forward. I think I may aim to go for a 997.1 GT3 in the future.

Comparing an e92 to a gt3 rs it a real apples to brick of jalapeño cheddar comparison. You are talking a fast, fun car that can be a small family hauler to a race car for the street. Not to mention one costs twice as much. They are not in the same category. But fucking rights go for a gt3 as your next car. Truly dream car material, but an M3 can EASILY be your only car. A gt3 cannot.

Joshua, I used to have a 996.2 gt3, it was the most enjoyable driving car I have ever owned.. The car was 10x a better car than I was a driver. The porsche thing is in my blood and I can't shake it....you cannot go wrong with a 997.1 gt3, but I would save up a bit more and get a 997.2 gt3 that car is light years ahead....funny thing about m cars, they make you feel like you are a better driver than you really are haha!

Once you go P-car there is no going back, the balance of the car is perfect. I already know my next car will be a 997 GT3, and I will probably keep that and the M3 until I die, I would have no interest in replacing either of them.

But why on earth you would compare a P-car to an M-car is beyond me, especially a GT3 :s lol. Perhaps compare an E46 M3 to a 996 C2s, I'm not sure the porsche is really any better.
