I used to work at a dealership, its not that uncommon for people to bring in oil or other parts they want.

Its nice to have the dealer doing all the work if you don't mind paying the extra cost.

I think the figure that's being passed around is ~70% of the breaking in is done within first 100 miles. I'm only changing it as it gets dirty/colour change, other Fiesta owners are seeing shiny metallic flakes in their drain pans at around 400-600 mile mark. Will probably do it every 4000-5000kms after my next one but I'm definitely not changing it every 1000kms, only doing it more frequently during break in. It's been ~900km since my last oil change so I'll probably check it out this weekend when the car is at 1500km or so.
Realistically the car would've had 2 oil changes by 5000km and 5-6 by 20,000kms not as dramatic as you're making it out to be.

Not sure when I should switch to synthetic though, I've been running semi-synthetic since that's what it comes with from factory. Lol someone on the FiestaST forum brought up a good point which is the engines not worth babying since they're $3200 USD brand new :P

Fair enough. But new engines have sooo much oil that a slight amount of sediment is not a problem. The time when people run into problems is when they are stupid and don't change the oil cause they haven't hit 6000kms in like 2 years. Oil's lubricating properties die off over time as well as use, which is why there is usually a 6 month & 6000km oil change schedule.

As for the change to synthetic, I would probably stick to whatever the factory oil is until that 5000km oil change then switch to a fully synthetic, and just stay with that from there on out. Mobil1 with a mobil1 filter is my choice, or Mobil1 with a Wix filter.

Just to keep the pictures going on the new page of this thread:

I can understand the concept, but if you're supplying the oil just get some place like Great Canadian to do it since they'll be cheaper than the dealer.

The reason why its nice to have the dealer performing all the work, is that it gives both parties peace of mind. The customer is assured that the work is done, and that if in the future if problems arise that there would be no problems trying to prove issues for warranty to fix.

And yes the above does happen, I did the oil changes on a family vehicle that we bought brand new and getting them to honour the warranty was a hassle cause they didn't believe I had properly maintained the vehicle.

The dealer has peace of mind knowing that there isn't going to be botch jobs and stripped screws all over the place, and if there is they know they have no right to be pissed off because its their own fault.

Also bringing your car to the same dealer every time means that they get to know you, and they are more likely to help you, or work with you on problems. Stuff like loaner cars and such are invaluable.

So there is a very real reason to go to your dealer instead of mr. Lube.

320icar 05-14-2014 10:18 AM

lol, also since my services are covered. so i could

1) take it to the dealership which is free for me, and supply the synthetic i already had
2) pay a shop that isn't the dealership, and supply my own oil, and not get the peace of mind of them also checking a few first service areas.

im also having the dealer check my faulty sound symposer. as well as a visual check on the rear motor mount and a left front side clunk (at full right lock over bumps)

underscore 05-14-2014 10:26 AM

^ you didn't mention it's free, in which case taking it somewhere else to save money is a moot point.

meme, it's an oil change not major work, and if you take it to a warranty approved oil change place then the dealer won't have any problems with it. I can see them having a problem with DIY since you're not a warranty approved oil change center. If you have a good dealer then it might be worth building up a relationship with them but the vast majority are a rip off just banking on the name they have on the side of the building so going to them for things you don't need them for is just a waste of money.

white rocket 05-14-2014 10:51 AM

I have experienced dealerships denying warranty claims with receipts from Mr. Lube (the apparent warranty approved service center). Yes, it is not rocket science but to some a receipt from the dealership will speak volumes for not only peace of mind but also resale value.

Holy shit, who gives a crap where he gets his oil changed.

If he wants to pay $1000 to have naked virgins change his oil, while he sits there and beats off, who gives a shit?

You're all killing my car-boner right now.

hopalong 05-14-2014 08:31 PM

Insanely nice after work today. Took the bike for a quick rip and finally washed my miata after a long winter in the garage. Must of been 1/4 inch of dust piled up on it.
