Opinions on Plasti Dip - Becoming more than just a trend?

The Plasti Dip scene seems to be rapidly expanding down south (and up here in BC too!)

Looks like it's no longer being seen as just a cheaper alternative to vinyl wraps or actual car paint - some of the results look spectacular with the new additions in pearl pigments and other additives that are being added to create all kinds of effects

It's not just Plasti Dip itself anymore - major companies such as Eastwood are offering their own lines of "ElastiDip" which is compliant with Canadian markets so rubberized coatings like these will be much more accessible.

What's everyone's thoughts and opinions on the advancements of Plasti Dip?
Is this just the beginning of rubberized vehicle coatings? Will vinyl wraps be left behind as these "rubberized coatings" are cheaper, flexible, applied quicker?

It can be if the dip is not thick enough in those spots..but of course it can be hard to get the thick buildup there without overspraying the other parts. There are products that dissolve dip, DYC sells it in a spray bottle. I'm sure there's something generic that does the job for a lot less.

^ apparently WD40 and Goo gone work, just make sure to give the car a thorough clean after

I've had plastidip stuck on my car for 3+ months since it's way too thin to peel and it's in retarded places

Attempting WD-40 + Goo gone when the weather gets better, hopefully it works out
Anyone know if WD40 leaves marks on black plastic and black rubber? Pretty sure goo gone does

zilley 03-03-2014 10:49 PM

easiest way to get get rid of thin layer of plastidip from my past experience is goo gone.

I fucked up my last layer on my grill and I sprayed the whole thing with goo gone and it just washed right off, thing literally melted off.

SpeedStars 03-03-2014 10:51 PM

^ a lot of degreasers do. Degreased my engine with actual engine degreaser and my hoses all have marks. Wd40'd my rear window trim cause there was baked on bird shit in the little crevice and there was a white stain. Polished it off though.

How's the durability on this stuff? I have a bunch of cans lying around in my garage, been thinking about doing it to my AE86 this summer. Paint is fading and chipping in several areas, I am planning to do a full repaint next winter but am too busy with work/school to do before the summer months. But I also don't want the thing to rust, and lettuce be cereal it looks like crap right now..

rriggi 03-03-2014 11:50 PM

Brake Cleaner will remove it instantly, ask me how I know.

If you have the option to wrap instead of plastidip, go for the wrap. Buying a roll of vinyl might be cheaper than the plasti-dip.

J.C 03-03-2014 11:53 PM

agreed, wrap > plastidip, may cost a little more, but do it right
does brake cleaner leave any residue on black trim/plastic/rubber? and is it safe on the paint?
i'll give it a shot

gilly 03-04-2014 02:37 PM

Plastidip on rims or small interior/exterior trim parts are ok. Looks good and is a cheap non permanent alternative. I plastidipped my rims last summer and it turned out great.

Plastidipping an entire car on the other hand doesn't look that good imo.

im torn on 2 wheel colours and if they become acceptable in a plasti dip can ill be able to test out the colour before a real paint job.. seems like a win to me

Kaolinite 03-04-2014 02:51 PM

^ thats what I do haha just buy 1 can and test it out to see what it looks like and then go get them painted if i like the color

snails 03-04-2014 02:54 PM

^ problem is the colours i want are not available yet.. its a matter or time before they expand the colours

Mr.Jay 03-04-2014 03:15 PM

Meh all the pearls and stuff were around before except not offered thru dyc or places like that. people that dip have been adding pigments to the dip for awhile now. you can do lots of custom colours and random things with it. hell I mixed some glow in the dark clear the other day.

DYC is just making it a lot easier for the first timer to do it all without the guess work

You can mix you own. I saw a kit at Industrial paints and plastics.

Catches dirt like crazy, still rather rap than dip

J-Chow 03-05-2014 12:36 AM

Plastii dipped my front and rear emblems flat black. Easy to remove and re apply. Bought mine in US and shipped to pt. Roberts. Way cheaper in US.
Also picked up 4x cans of anthracite grey, planning to paint my rims next month. It's a relatively cheap alternative instead of professional spray paint or vinyl.

Did my wheels in anthracite with a coat of the glossifier. Looks almost factory.

there is a blue subaru just like the one pictured above that i see often parked where i work, and it is a dirt magnet. with the bad weather we have been getting that car is often more grey/brown than blue :(

i have nothing against the product, but i do have an issue with the unfortunate poor results from DIYers doing it wrong. again, near where park my car, there is this x5 that is supposed to be matte black done with plastidip, but you can the coating was poorly applied so you can see stripes left behind from each pass of the can or spray gun... honestly it looks like a 2-tone black/grey zebra

snails 03-05-2014 09:28 AM

so where do you guys buy yours, crossing the boarder is obviously cheaper and if im over there i might as well grab some, who carries is, im looking for the copper metalizer and black

Gululu 03-05-2014 09:43 AM

For large panels or whole car use wrap.
The texture of plastic dips is too thick even if it's sprayed from their spray gun (lays on very unevenly compared to vinyl wrap or paint). Makes your car look cartoonish/ cheap.
Also there is no protection against solvents or even UV.

ScratchedMy991 03-05-2014 09:47 AM

I'm an old fart and am completely clueless as to these new, fandangled ways of changing the color of your car.

Like new paint, does this dipping stuff reduce the resale value of a car? How do the costs of a (proper) re-paint compare to dipping and wrapping? Does wrapping make more sense, as it can be removed?

I love the look of wraps, but to me nothing beats the brilliance of shiny paint.
