and actually this starts an interesting debate.

i find people's desire to own property (that they live in) is about showing off. it's the whole 'look what i bought'.

to me, it's all financial. now, i'll admit, i live in a very nice place (modest and within my means, but still, very nice in my eyes) - which would be way more to buy than rent. i rent it, i treat it as my home (because it is!) and it is beautifully sparse inside.

tv - yup
internet - yup,
couch, bed, dining table - yup

that's it - no junk, no shit cluttering up my place.

go to a baller's place, it'll be full of chinese made plastic shit. i was taught at a young age to buy stuff that will last you, treat it well and it'll last you a lifetime, i still believe that. i still use (when i'm in canada, at least) tools of my father's and even some of his father's - it's the appreciation of the finer things in life that are actually cheaper in the long run that is the difference in mindset between the average pillock and people who are well off.

i'd say, unfortunately, my types are dying off in great numbers, our generation are full of douches... the only hope is that the hipster movement, whilst hopefully dying soon, breeds a new generation of people who want to do more with less. more powerful phones/tablets that can do everything for them, no need for other computers, tv's, etc. no desire for a suburban big house (i wonder where that market will go in 20 years)

times are very interesting, and i hope 2008 taught us that consumerism sucks. being a service industry blows. i work in a production industry, and i'm so happy about that, i like being able to say that my company produces X, Y, and Z product and that this product makes our lives better - as opposed to service industries that i just can't get behind as much.

maybe i'm just a 60 year old in a 31 yr old's skin?

with your income, and your wants and needs, you are already a very free man.

i am in the same boat. if i were to make more, i wouldn't really move anywhere, nor would i buy a crazy ass car. or any of that shit. i would just do my hobbies a lot more often, and minimize my work hours to as little as possible.

i would heavily invest it all, to secure my freedom. not to secure my ability to throw money around like it doesn't matter. because IT ALWAYS MATTERS.

material wealth and all that shit. it's just like any other drug. you either get hooked on it or you don't. most people don't have the self control to lay off of it. and no amount of money will ever give them freedom. they'll always be tied down by their inflated ego and their perpetual need for more shit.

bball doesn't understand that, at any level of wealth, you always have to be financially responsible and conservative. he doesn't understand the concept that one can spend more money than they make, no matter HOW much they make. doesn't matter if you're fucking carlos slim. he can go broke in a week if he chose to throw money around like he doesn't care. and he's got multi billions.

there is an obvious divide in money mentality here.

on one hand we have jason who does throw money around like crazy, but he is the type of financially reckless guy that i have no doubt, if he made a billion, he'd blow a billion. but he'd also have the balls and initiative to go out and make another billion if he goes broke. he lacks the fear of going broke because he knows money can be made if you just go out and pull the trigger.

we have the the people who are good risk management types, ones that can manage money in an exceptional way. and make it grow in a way where other people would give up their first borns to learn the secret.

and we got bball who thinks there's some level you can reach where you can just throw money around like there's a magical endless supply.

billionaires can lose billions in a day. you should remember that. you can always blow your wealth, with stupid moves, no matter how rich you think you are. simple examples are the casino and markets, where what you lose, scales with how rich you are.

that's exactly it. at even modest income, you can still live within your means, invest enough, be smart about money and then have enough to retire comfortably.
