Meh.
Am I the only one that would let her off with a slap on the wrist and a hefty fine? Make them pay more each time and stop them at the border EVERY SINGLE TIME to make sure and when they have stuff they haven't declared, make them pay a big fine.
They don't care because they're rich and the government makes money so maybe they can lower my tax rates.
Everyone wins. This is a victimless crime, realistically so just make some money off the fools and let's all move on. Deport? I'd see dollar signs all over these people. If they don't like paying ridiculous amounts, then they'll stop sneaking shit over the border. If they don't care, then the Canadian government can plate all our roads in gold using money we've pilfered from wealthy internationals.

I used to travel a ton for work and had a circle of friends that travel a lot as well. We have a joke about custom officers for each country. If you went to the UK, the officer would ask you a bunch of typical questions and then say have a nice trip. If you went to China, they don't say a word and stamp your passport and you just go. Going to Taiwan they ask if it's the first time you've been there and say enjoy your stay with a big smile. Going to the US they don't smile and ask you why you're here to steal american's jobs and send you off into a room for an hour to haggle you. Coming back to Canada, the only question they ask you is what you bought abroad that they can tax you on....

I wonder how many people buy expensive goods in the US and than ship the stuff back home. I know on the card you fill before landing they ask if you mailed anything back but seems like it would be impossible for Canada customs to control.

I wonder if this lady has some fake balls or is just plain stupid? You already got caught before. It's basically taken that you are going to get searched every time you cross the border, and yet she still tries to smuggle shits back?!?! Even if one wanna do it, can she at least buy something that's actually worth the risk? Hermes prices is pretty much the same between US/CA (with the new rate factored in). It's actually more expensive to bring it back if one already has to pay taxes in US.
And she's from my alma mater. Not a way I wanted to read about it on the news.

I'm not bashing people in the finance industry, imo it's a game and they're just playing along with everyone else, but it's just that, a game, and a very grey one at that.

You get caught once, I say let them pay their taxes and carry on. It happens again, and you think you can fuck the system? The system should fuck you right back. You want to live here, you play by the rules, or get punished.

Non-violent crimes like this should be given appropriate financial punishment. Jail costs the government and therefore, all of us, money. People in jail take up space, utilities, food, and hours of administrator and guard pay. I'd rather use that money to pay for additional border guard staff to carry out mandatory stop and search for anyone crossing the border that has previously been caught not declaring their goods.
So you people calling for jail are nuts. That benefits no one.

People that get caught are the people that say nothing to declare. If you declare something and don't look like a suspicious douche while doing it, then they'll probably wave you through.

They should give her the fine, but also make her do community service or something as well.

For everyone asking is she's a citizen, the answer is NO. She wouldn't need a student visa if she was a citizen and she's not an immigrant because she's not living here permanently. Had many friends that had to get visas to go to school in the states, it's no different for Canada.

Perhaps the fine should be even bigger. The higher the cost of goods, the fine/duties/tax percentage. Good enough for me. Like Ronin said, our government gets more international money from these wealthy foreign nationals.

If they're done with it then you've prevented the crime from happening again, which is the point of punishment by law in the first place. If they aren't done, THEN BLING BLING.

The same reason why we are subjected to the various USA states tax laws when we go shopping or win a haul at a casino or something. We pay the taxes there, but when we get back, we can then file a claim to be compensated. Depending on what it is, of course.
