^ What am I looking at here? I'm intrigued

Raid3n 12-06-2017 12:01 PM

got a vortex 1-4x scope with non-flared objective lens for my kar98.

for a mixture of target and hunting

Today was the day - my AR was finally finished its custom Cerakote finish from Frank at CerakoteBC. After I went to pick it up, Frank took me to his range so we could put it through its paces. He also gave me some tips on better pistol techniques - he was an instructor and competitor for over 35 years. The green is Sniper Green and I forgot the black, but I'll find out. A larger scope is in the future.

Build is as follows:

Dlask custom CCFR lower with custom serial number
Dlask 20" 5.56 chrome lined barrel
Dlask buffer tube kit
Dlask bolt carrier group
Phase 5 upper
Strike Industries red charge handle
Phase 5 Fatman muzzle break
Generic True North Arms lower kit, gas tube, 17" M-Lok hand rail, low profile gas block, 45 degree back-up sights, and skeletonized buttstock.
Magpul BAD bolt release

Fucking beauty!

underscore 12-12-2017 07:59 PM

Fuck me sideways that is stunning. I love the touches of red. How does it feel?

Zedbra 12-12-2017 09:41 PM

It feels a lot lighter than it looks. I need a better trigger sometime down the road, and I need to figure out how to either lower the cheek riser or raise my scope - but that is the fun part of gun ownership is finding that right combo that fits you personally. I need a new gas block, this one was built 5 thou out of spec and I wasn't getting enough gas to eject the empty case. I am going to get a Dlask gas block and have it cerakoted and installed.

That is a nice build, Zed.
The charge handle is so much nicer than the stock units are.

As for weight, I was surprised as to how light my AR is. Compared to my T97, where I had to lose the optic and go back to iron sights because it was too heavy, the AR is a featherweight. That's not a light optic of mount you're using either.

+1, would shoot again.
:fullofwin:

Zedbra 12-13-2017 04:35 PM

So far, I like the charge handle. It wasn't stupid expensive, either.

incubus 12-14-2017 09:14 AM

some good looking guns in here.

surprised there's not a lot of talk of the new non restricted BCL 102, M+M M10x, keltech rdb and the Maccabee Defense SLR.

originalhypa 12-14-2017 10:59 AM

Hi Incubus!
You may be getting a call from my buddy about the RDB. We were talking about that last night. He already has a KSG, but doesn't like that you have to manually switch between the feed tubes. He also makes lots of money, and has no kids so he can afford to change guns over stupid little shit like that :jiggy::awesom:

originalhypa 12-15-2017 08:23 AM

So, I took my AR out last night along with 180 rounds of reloaded .223, and 60 rounds of military surplus. Not a single one of my reloads worked in the AR. It was jamming, light striking the primer, or simply just not even feed. I used multiple mags and nothing worked. Finally, I tried to shoot a single, hand fed round. That's when I realized it was definately the reloads.

So I moved on to my T97. Same thing happened with the reloads. The only difference was my T97 worked with the reloads when it had one or two rounds in the mag. I then moved on to the military surplus, which I am happy to say worked flawlessly with both the T97 and the AR.

So I am baffled.....
I took some measurements this morning and saw no differences between a clean piece of brass, and my reloads. All the dimensions seemed to be in check.

Zedbra 12-15-2017 09:22 AM

^ hard primers. I haven't started loading 223 yet, but I have heard people swearing by Federal primers for the calibre.

originalhypa 12-15-2017 12:45 PM

You think?
I'm using CCI small rifle primers. They shoot out of my T97, you know, once they feed..... :okay:

I know my sizing was a bit off, where my OAL was like 2.24" as opposed to 2.20"
And there appears to be a bit of a bulge just below the crimp. Honestly, I should have made 20 and taken them to the range to test them out before building $40 worth of bunk ammo.

I'm taking off early today to make a nice soup for my hot pot. But once that shit is simmering, it's back down to the loading room to figure this out. I'll pop the projectile and powder out of one of my reloads and see if the brass fits the barrel. That's what I'm thinking, as it would explain the jams.

If not, then I'm back to square one. Square two could be to change the primer.

Zedbra 12-15-2017 01:21 PM

Okay - I'm sick as hell today, just read over your post again. One of two things: Sounds like you didn't size them properly. Did you only neck size or FL size? Or - did you bump the shoulder when setting the bullet (hence the bulge below the crimp)? It will be one or the other if it isn't loading.

^ you're the black rifle guru around here - what's your opinion on these? my black rifle ended up green!

....and I'm still waiting for you to get a bolt action. I may end up giving you one just cuz

incubus 12-20-2017 08:10 AM

Neck size is about .005 thicker than factory rounds, and the base of the brass has a mild bulge. Looks like I shit the bed on these rounds.

:okay:

Zedbra 12-20-2017 11:34 AM

If the base of the brass has a mild bulge and not the shoulder, then you need to run your die up higher when you full length size. My 7mm REM brass sometimes bulges, so you have to FL size it every time. You never did answer that question if you only neck sized or FL?

incubus 12-20-2017 12:34 PM

Maybe try buying a new gun see if it cycles :troll:

I was a little overconfident when I made these rounds. In fact, I've narrowed it down to the automatic powder dispenser ever so gently crushing my brass. I haven't had the time to reset everything, but no biggie as I have no time to shoot right now anyway. I may just bite the bullet (no pun intended) and buy a freedom bucket from Cabelas just to run some copper down the pipe.

To answer your question, I have to ask my own question.
Dafuq does FL mean? I measured the overall length, and the diameter of the neck and base of my brass. But I'm finding that I learn things as I go on. I had no issues with my 357, whether in my revolver or my lever. I guess I just got a little cocky when it came to the 223.
