Seems like a decent deal for a later model E39?

Overall it looks pretty presentable, some bigger ticket maintenance done, a couple of tasteful mods (yes I know that is subjective) and what seems like a reasonably honest and forthright ad.

BMW 540 M Sport 6-spd - $5000

https://images.craigslist.org/00808_...e_1200x900.jpg

2003 BMW 540i M SPORT. Black, Black Leather Interior. Rare example of the collectable e39. Despite other ads which call their cars M Sports only the 2003 can truly be an M SPORT. And only a small number came as manual . The 540i M Sport package includes M suspension II, 18” M Parallel Spoke alloy wheels and 235/40R front, 265/35R rear performance tires; a sleek Aerodynamic Kit including front spoiler, side trim and rear apron; and a visible exhaust tip. Interior features include an M footrest and back roof liner; M-Technic sport steering wheel with multi-function controls; 12-way power sport seats with adjustable thigh support; and high gloss shadowline trim.

The car purrs like a kitten and shifts beautifully with the UUC Ultimate Short Shift Kit. Maintenance items I've done on the car includes new clutch, trans/motor mounts, rear main seal, timing chains/guides/gaskets, valley pan gasket, new throttle body, upper and lower control arms and tie rods, wheel bearings. Brakes and tires are in great shape. The hood has the normal rock chips that can be expected but overall paint and body is beautiful. There is a crack in the rear apron (see pic) - my son learned that snow banks change from soft snow into hard ice crust as he backed the car into the driveway .

Kid was probably trying to drift it.

Does anyone know how this era of 3 series is for reliability? It's one of my favourite versions of the 3 series and i'd love to get one someday.

tofu1413 04-06-2019 08:51 AM

earlier cars have rod bearings that arent quite that great

throttle body actuator

rear diff leaks or stop locking at higher km

brakes are expensive at the dealer

shitty fuel consumption

but the balanced feel and the screaming V8.... worth it. first body style launched in north america with carbon roof.

What tofu said but ideally even with later ones you would still want to change the rod bearings with larger ones that don’t lock the oil passage so tight that they get deprived from oil. 2010+ Idrive is WAY better

Brother had an e90 M3 6MT 2008. Another issue was that the clutch for the 2008 manuals were different from any other years of the e90, and from what I heard, the other years were not compatible with the 2008 model. As a result, a clutch replacement required a flywheel replacement too. I think parts alone costs like 3-4k for a clutch job

Tofu, out of curiosity how many sales reps in your experience are as knowledgeable as you; specs wise in your opinion. The few times i've shopped for and bought new vehicles i'm always frustrated by the fact that know body has answers to my specific questions. Usually I already know what I want but I want information on driveline specs, gear ratios, lsd's, etc.

I always enjoy your input and knowledge, specifically bmw stuff. But I feel as though you go, and know, above and beyond the average sales rep.

Sorry for thread derailing..

tofu1413 04-06-2019 02:42 PM

I know that car quite well, since i've owned both the M3 coupe and sedan versions.

I do know people that know specs on cars better than I do... and they're not in the car industry!

What really helped in knowing the cars is having to do homework on the multiple, many many cars I have owned and I also like to venture into the shop/ service department during slower days. Chatting with the Techs and advisors goes a long way especially you know your own product's short comings.

I also have quite a few friends that goes through cars as well, so when we do meet up and talk about cars, its usually rants and talking about shit about their own cars...

lastly, besides a few bs customers here and there, I enjoy my job and I dont mind learning about new stuff all the time.

Seen a couple reviews on this a couple years back. Seems like a fun little car for the price if the turbo holds up.

B204L was rated at 185hp@5.5k rpm and 194lbft@2.1k rpm.

68style 04-06-2019 07:32 PM

^ been for sale since there was lots of snow on the ground, can probably talk the price down quite a bit!

Dbone 04-06-2019 07:59 PM

edit: nevermind

in addition to tofu's list for m3 specific
lots more other "common" issues if you look up e90 issues in general.

dct leaks
dct internal failure
idle control valve
valve spring snapping
ignition coils
drive train whine, trans or diff
battery module/adaptation
oil consumption
ruined spark plugs
clunking and bushings problems

68style 04-06-2019 10:48 PM

^ Sounds like a great car, where do I sign up?

Akinari 04-07-2019 01:18 AM

That M3 has a $20k+ rear accident, no thanks.

twitchyzero 04-07-2019 06:34 AM

personally dont understand the point of a single CF panel when the vehicle is already 3500lbs

westopher 04-07-2019 07:03 AM

It looks good.

prolepsis 04-07-2019 08:37 AM

In addition to the items/issues listed above, the other thing to note for the E9x is that it eats gas like crazy. But that's a given, since it's a high-revving V8.

It's an enjoyable daily. Good balance of power, somewhat analog feel, yet comfy as well.

Just factor in maintenance and potential repair costs.

Selling prices seem to be pretty decent for the E9x M3s right now.

Not in BC (Alberta), not on CL, might not be a good buy, but it's certainly on the cheap end for an E39 M5.

On the subject of E9X M3's, the biggest issue I have is the seating position, the car NEEDS buckets, lower seeing position provides a dramatic improvement to the ergonomics and the sense of occasion when driving the car.

TopsyCrett 04-07-2019 02:36 PM

Anyone remember how much this sold for last year? Have a buyer lined up for the Pontiac and I want to get something better on gas.

Spec list looks str8 outta 2005. I dig it. Would be great to have a Honda daily again, while the EM1 is still being prepped for track use.

I'd wanna get rid of these wheels (imagine this with white TE37's :megusta:) and maybe weld on a smaller tip on the apexi to make it less prone to a VI.

tofu1413 04-07-2019 03:27 PM

I think it was around $2k give or take few hundred.

$1800? something like that. i was thinking about going halfers with my buddy last year LOL

white TE37 pls
