Actually Jmac is right. Used car from a dealership is charged 5% GST and 7% PST. Used cars on a private sale is charged 12% PST. Either way it's still 12% tax.

Why? HST was the opportunity the government used to increase private sales to 12%, it should have gone back to 7% when the HST was repealed but it didn't.

There's no one to blame except the collusion that occurred between the provincial government and the new car dealers association for quietly sliding that change through even when HST was repealed. You want to blame someone, contact these guys: https://www.newcardealers.ca/

I don't think you're entirely in the clear. I think the buyer is the one they'd go after for money since that's all the government cares about anyway, but that said the APV9T very clearly has a red box around the selling price that you are declaring in the sale and below that the legalese reads something to the effect that by signing here you are guaranteeing you have not received anything above and beyond the consideration you wrote in that box.

Up to you man. You're still signing a legal document with a value you declared on it that you knew to be false. You could always just claim ignorance though or say that you signed the form and handed it off and it was out of your hands when the actual ownership transaction took place (this happens quite commonly)

Spoiler!
It was yet another example of gov't catering to a small group of powerful individuals. Just like the taxi cartels, the real estate tycoons, the casino investors, et al.

dealers may have pushed for it, but the provincial gov are the ones raking in the extra coin, not the dealerships. the issue here is that a HUGE stink wasn't made about it by the public 6 years ago when the HST was repealed.

THIS THREAD NEEDS A GOOD BUY STAT

I posted this one before, and assumed it sold quick, but I think it's the same owner a month later. I think it's up a few bucks but it's still a good deal, and the repost sometimes shows while the price has gone up, the bottom line may not have. I'd go into this one in the very low 30's

Would be hard to take the yellow cayman over this

Just sell the car cheap and sell some accessory (winter tires, floor mats, whatever) for an inflated price as a separate transaction. They can still pull that bullshit on the buyer but the seller should be in the clear unless it's somehow illegal to sell overpriced car parts.

Here's an unsolicited tax tip for you business owners out there. If you are a GST registered business and you are buying a vehicle for business use, you will get the GST input tax credit (subject to limitations) on the vehicle's purchase price if buying the vehicle from a car dealership (because 5% GST). Whereas, if you buy the vehicle privately, you are paying 12% PST and therefore not entitled to a GST input tax credit because you did not pay GST. The PST then gets capitalized to the cost of the vehicle and amortized in accordance with the capital cost allowance rules.

It's something to consider when you have two similar and closely priced vehicles but one is from a dealership and the other a private sale.

You'll more than make up for that savings buying private because a private seller's price is going to be way more than 5% cheaper than any dealership will price the equivalent car for 99/100 times.

^ that makes sense on new vehicles. I just purchased my latest vehicle from a VW dealership for a good price. All other vehicles I’ve purchased have been private.

What a treat. All fluids topped up. Vehicle inspection, fulltank of gas, full polish and chip fills after I purchased and work done without my even knowing. I was pretty happy with the dealership experience. Something I always frowned upon before.

I want to say the first picture is the tan one and the second is yellow? What blows me away is that they're from the same year, how bland was the person at Chrysler who decided they needed two pale beige's available?

Yeah but you gotta understand that in the 70's, all shades of brown were VERY hot.
Also the Chrysler New Yorker was the North American equivalent to what a Bentley is today (or at least an MB S class).
