such hate for the N54 engine. My friend just ran 11.3 @ 122 with bolt-ons and drag radials in his 135i. Maybe its not the best engine if you are keeping it stock and looking to save money on maintenance but if you are looking to make power you cant beat it. It comes with forged internals. Get a Toyota if you are looking to save money and not worry about maintenance costs. Not a BMW.

The n54 came with forged internals? That’s surprising. Only issues I’ve really heard over the years was carbon build up (all direct injection), turbos leaking oil and the entire plastic based cooling system

also waterpumps are not the greatest as well as injectors issues . Index 12s are the newest and greatest ones. Mine is still on index 1s with 200k on them. Almost 500whp daily with e85 and they seem to be working fine. Plastic cooling system is the same on all bmws...i had my expansion tank crack on a e46 330ci as well as some other bmws i have owned. Same with all their seals and gaskets, valve cover leaked on every bmw i owned.

I had a N54 for 5 years and that engine is PITA. Replaced HPFP, water pump, leaked injectors, head gasket. and other problems. Don't buy this POS if you can't work on the car yourself.

But guys...these are features of every BMW, not problems. You buy a BMW for the features, luxury, and driving experience. What's wrong with you guys!

To be honest, I'd much rather be enjoying my weekend driving my car rather than fixing it.

^ As a former owner myself I can honestly say you're just insanely lucky to never see a CEL on a N54 car

that might be true, a lot of people who are tuned are complaining about misfires. I changed my plugs and coils when i first tuned it and its been at 21psi for 2 years with no misfires. Probably over 60-70 passes at mission drag strip as well with no issues. It had leaky gaskets and a check engine when i bought it due to bad boost solenoids but havent had any major issues in the past 40.000kms. Im ready to swap injectors when they go since they are index1 from 2007 but they still work fine. Set new personal bests last week so its not looking like its slowing down at all.

i missed a $7500 135i last week. Drove great - just a fed up owner that didn't want to tackle the faulty ABS system. I planned to replace the pump myself w a junkyard part.

Made an offer but unfortunately he sold it to a buddy who matched my number + a little bit more.

Dodged a bullet or missed a steal - either way, they're really fast right out of the box, and they stop on a dime. Great value in these cars if you're willing to work on them. I wouldn't want one if it was my only vehicle.

as i said earlier my buddy with a 135i has downpipes, intercooler, trans tune, engine tune and drag radials. 11.3 @ 122. Couple more mods and he has a legit 10 sec car.

7500 is a really good deal, they are usually good 3-5k more than a 335i. Same engine as a 1M lol... i dont hear people saying 1M is POS

i think the 1M, 335is and Z4 35is had slight revisions to the N54 with improved reliability.

I remember a big ticket thing was an oil cooler. some of the N54s didnt come with one.

later MY cars supposedly have improved fuel pumps and injectors too!

2008s and 2009 all had different injectors, index 3s and 6s, ( there are index 8s 9s 11s and 12s) and a new ECU MSD81 - none of them came with index 12s which are the latest revisions. Also there was a 10 year warranty for high pressure fuel pumps on all n54s models so that was addressed as well.

can't stand most of the bangle-era bmw, the estate is no exception
they're only acceptable with a V10 + 3rd pedal, M wheels/fender grilles
i suppose the E86 coupe looks great from the rear

My N54 335i was pretty reliable until last 2 months where it started to pile all at once. Had to replace the HPFP out of my own pocket as it passed the 10 year warranty, $1200 for that. Valve cover gasket and oil filter housing was leaking, coolant leak due to radiator and hosing, injectors were misfiring. This all cost me $5500 plus the $1200 for the fuel pump.

As mentioned above already, every BMW from that era have leaky gaskets and cooling issues, along with injectors, coils, plugs, etc. etc. blah blah, not just the N54. I have an N52 with all almost all of the above issues addressed already, minus the turbo-related ones.

the round emblem also hides the back up camera on the bmw and the vws.... pretty neat idea to keep the camera clean.

I mean where is the hinge? I can't see any seams that would allow it to open.

edit: I looked it up, looks like the actual window frame is hidden underneath. It's a pretty massive looking trunk actually.
