seems like most owners dont keep it long: once the honeymoon phase is over like you're in a car chase in Ronin, you probaby realize milage too awful for dailying, tracking it adds up very fast on consumables/ throwing any shred of reliability out the door

so what is it good for that the e90 m3 at can't do at 25-30k+ that's likely just as rare and comes in a taut package? v8 for v8 does the S62 sound a lot better?

I agree with you for the most part, but time makes things much rarer. I’m sure while there are plenty of e39 m5s produced, plenty are gone. I see e90m3s far more often. It comes down to what people like. I’d buy a 30k e36 m3 before a 30k e46 m3 simply because I like it more, even though the e46 is better in every measurable way.

I think the WRX 265 is a real thing, I dunno what the differences were but it's like a narrow body poor man's STI but rich man's WRX. My friend had one and I drove it when they first came out.

westopher 10-26-2019 11:23 AM

My friend bought one new as well. I remember going to the dealer with him to pick it up but it wasn’t a named special edition. It was just a mid cycle model improvement that the wrx was.

whitev70r 10-26-2019 02:25 PM

WRX 265 is a 'thing' ... but I agree that owner is spinning a huge tale about how it can beat an STI or Porsche 997.

it's like if a 90s Impala SS creeped up in value that closed the price delta btw a decade old CTS-V, i'd be more interested in the more modern example that seems to be a better package

and i understand there's probably intangible attributes that i'm missing, so what makes it more desirable other than being slightly rarer?

westopher 10-26-2019 06:26 PM

Because someone likes it more? It's not a crazy concept. I think it looks better. It's not quantitative. People like what they like.

FWIW, when I was selling my (second) e39 M5 2 years ago with a clean title, 01+, 175k kms, i had it listed for $27k, which was on the lower end of the spectrum of the CL listed prices. I had it on for months, and the only serious offer I got was 21.5k. I eventually had someone pick it up for $25, but it was a long road.

68style 10-27-2019 03:56 AM

E39 M5 is my ultimate BMW, I couldn’t care less if any other models are faster or more luxurious... it’s the pinnacle of sports sedan styling/execution in my eyes.

And here it is, my unicorn.
Saab 9-3 Aero Sportcombi, XWD, 6MT, 2008 (clamshell hood and updated interior) with only 45K! And where is it, at? Splendid Auto, a dealer who “knows what he’s got!” It’s not really a good buy because they’re asking $20K for it. FeelsBadMan

I’m just posting it up because of it’s unicorn-ness. Please don’t fail me and add to my pain. If this thing was a reasonable price, I’d be driving down to the city to buy it tomorrow.

Lots of options - BOSE Sound, sunroof, power everything, etc. Impossible to find car, let alone with such low mileage and as new condition. Everything works, Michelin tires with good thread. Drives and looks like a new car. It will not disappoint. By Appointment Only. No Doc Fees. 19,900 D30111

^ That is a beautiful specimen! Because of the high asking price, I can't thank you but ... I won't fail you either :o. Nice find.

What would you pay for something like this? I find you can easily knock off $2000 from dealer asking price without too much effort.

This got a price drop, I don't remember what it was before but I think it was around 4 or 5K.

Ok, what is wrong with these volvos? Thats outrageously low for a car that cost prob 45-50 new?

JDMDreams 10-28-2019 07:38 AM

249k kms? Sun roof doesn't work? It's a lolvo so parts probably ain't cheap :rukidding:

bcrdukes 10-28-2019 07:47 AM

I think it's the overall maintenance and upkeep required to keep these cars going. Maintenance/parts are not cheap (i.e. compared to your usual Japanese car) and often, not a huge market of people wanting to move over to a Volvo.

BIC_BAWS 10-28-2019 07:57 AM

Is it as bad as an E46 or E9X 3 series tho?

Edit: in regards to maintenance

Totally different vehicles with different target markets.

That's like comparing a Crown Vic to a BMW 5 series.
Sure they are both RWD, but that's where the similarities end.

JDMDreams 10-28-2019 09:17 AM

I mean it's totally in the same price range as an e90 mt with similar mileage, so it's not like it's dirt cheap or anything

Argh snowfarmer... I feel your pain, that ad makes my pants very tight. Such a rare beauty... but geez you can find a Turbo X (which are the rims the owner has put on it anyway) for less money than that. It's at least $7-8k overpriced as it sits in my opinion..............
