I'm actually contemplating a 987 Cayman S over an E46 M3 (never meet your M heros). I prefer the 987.5, but that's out of price range for now. And that's M2 money LOL
What's happened with your E46? Did they write it off?
If I don't have a kid and we weren't going to have one, it'll be a GT4 parked in my spot right now, not a F80.
Jack Raby has done a magnificent job of stoking the fire of M96 flaws.
He has a patented solution for the IMS that he makes a ton of money off of.
He has an engine rebuild service (and mechanics school) that he makes a ton of money off of.
He has a 1 year waiting list for guys who desperately want to tell other porsche guys at the C&C that they have a "Raby-built" motor, and that it's bulletproof now (it isn't)
Is the motor flawed? absolutely it has issues. Porsche has acknowledged that to a certain degree (although won't replace out of warranty motors)
I choose to ignore that hype. They're great cars. Not to sound like a dick, but they're cheap sports cars too. You can get a decent boxster for 10k, and now apparently a cayman for 20!
If you can't live with the idea that you're actually paying for the motor, and not the car - don't buy one. An S2000 would suit a nervous buyer much better if they couldn't handle the thought that their 25k "investment" car might be mechanical write off at some point.
I tend to change cars often, so I can't promise what I will do if disaster strikes (215k kms and going strong). I think I would keep my car if I popped a motor. turn3 out in langley builds a very fine 3.8 that makes any M96 car a GT3 killer.
Producer, I agree with most of what you've said here. For myself, the part(s) that do not sit well is how my $15 - $20k asset can all of a sudden go boom, and then it may only be worth $2 - $3k in parts. I don't like the idea of a like-for-like (used) engine swap in this case, because the swapped engine is likely not that different than the potentially ticking time bomb that went boom in the first place. As awesome as a 3.8L build would be, it also means the car is no longer a $20k car. And if that was the case, my thinking is I might as well spend that total amount in the first place to get a newer / better car without having to go through the trouble.
But that is just me. If stuffing a big 3.8L flat 6 into a 987 is your thing, I'd be very happy to see you in a giant slayer.
Imagine the time spent parting it out though. All the lights, wheels, brakes will be gone fast and then you're left with a glove box and shit you cant get rid of lol.
You'd be surprised at how much Porsche parts cars are worth. More often than not, they are worth more with a blown engine than if it were running with its engine at end of life. A lot of the guys who get into club or spec racing sweep them up for their builds.
On the one hand I imagine even a basic engine rebuild is pricey, because Porsche. But then the shell or the rest of the parts should hold decent value as well, because Porsche.
If a rolling chassis really is only worth $3k and a rebuild is very costly I would expect someone out there is coming up with options to chuck other engines in.

This is the exact issue with v8 BMWs easy $5000 bill if your engine craps out on a $8000 car Everytime I start that car I worry if it's gonna explode and cause a 4 digit repair bill. Cuz it's happened before and it's not a pleasurable ownership experience
There's a shop that builds kits to put a turbocharged Honda K20 into a 987 rolling chassis and it royally pissed off a lot of people (mainly Porschephiles) but the results have been very positive. Best - it cost less than $3000. Any way, back to original programming. Enjoy your cars!

I’m sure you could pull a shit load of peices out of the car in a day. Catalogue them, post them up, bring the rest to the dump
I’m sure the time spent VS the value of parts you’d pull you’d be making $50-100 an hour

I cringed as soon as I thought about dealing with the masses of mouth breathing morons and idiots on Craiglist and Facebook marketplace haggleing with me over a headlight. I'd rather get waterboarded at Guantanamo Bay.
Two things I won't do for money. Back alley HJ's and selling parts on Facebook.

Yeah both E46s are written off. M3 is at the salvage yard, and the 330 is still in my garage. 330 I'm gonna plate it for a month or 3 months, until they give me an offer. I might plate it for a full year and then cancel, but I wanna keep my park plates.

call you broker - i think you can keep it now w the covid provisions even if you aren't plated
Would it still be $3K-$4K on a 987 engine since you have to split the cases? Easier job on the 996 motor where you can get at it by disconnecting engine & transmission.

Really a non-issue if you score a clean Cayman for 20k and get it done.

Splitting the case is a roughly 15k minimum to do it locally. Used engines from us wreckers are 5k usd and up before shipping and labour. New assembled block without heads from the dealer is 20k and up. Have to add hardware, gaskets kits, labour on top. At those prices, I rather run a f22c. At least when they pop, its cheap and easy to diy rebuild and cost a lot less for a whole long block at the yards.
Not sure if this has been posted, since it is a few weeks old.
Needs papers, but from what I've been told that's not a huge deal.

I completely agree but if you had room to store it you could probably get someone to buy everything in one shot if it was already parted

Holy shit, that has an ST165 Celica Alltrac/GTFour motor in it from the looks of it. At the least it has the intercooler and intake manifold, and that would explain the crazy remote oil filter setup (I spy an MBC as well). If that's true and it was decently done the hard work is already handled. Slap a newer gen 3SGTE in there for a couple grand and away you go.
