Brakes and tires are dirt cheap on the NA/NB's. $35/rotor and $100/tire is completely do-able. Not sure about the water pump & timing belt though.

Brakes - easy DIY
Tires - any tire shop can do it, costs less if you have 4 jackstands And just bring them the wheels while they’re off for you to do the brake job.
W-pump/timing belt, a little more complex as you need to know about marking the timing belt position, locking out the cams while you do the job. It is DIYable but I woudn’t call it an easy DIY.

The parts for these cars are cheap as chips and available everywhere though.

If I was buying I would do the brakes myself and get a shop to do the t-belt/w-pump.

Yeah, brakes and tires are fine (and I've done them on other cars), it's the water pump/timing belt that I'm not so sure about. Thanks! I am in contact with him... we'll see how this goes.

Surprised it needs all that at 65K km's.

Why? Brakes and tires would prob be it's 2nd set at 65k.

The belt and pump? Don't you always do the pump with a clutch in these things?

underscore 08-28-2020 02:21 PM

I skimmed a couple DIYs, the water pump/timing belt change seems pretty easy on a Miata so even if you get a shop to do it you're not going to be spending much.

roastpuff 08-28-2020 02:27 PM

Guy says no accidents, but hasn't replied to my question regarding interior pics (none in the original listing), rocker panel/underhood/rust question, and whether or not it's got a clean title.

Timing belt is probably the toughest thing, but it's a pretty routine procedure and can be done in a garage in a full day by somebody who has some home mechanic experience.

I'm assuming even if you get it done at a shop, its probably $1000 or so, right? I heard that with the early 1.6 NA engines, if you don't torque the crank pulley to the right spec, over time, the crank pulley will develop a wobble and the engine will grenade itself. Heard that it also applies to the 1.8's, but a shop that I spoken to suggested that the later long nose crank engines are preferable.

Low mileage doesn't necessarily mean no maintenance. I find that a lot of "summer" cars tend to have more deferred maintenance jobs sometimes. Low mileage != no wear.

twitchyzero 08-28-2020 07:11 PM

ultra low mileage miata makes me a bit sad

it's not like they'll hold value, saving it for the next owner?

i put 12k on mine each 'summer' (above 5C)

The 1.8l in the 2nd gen don't have any issues with crank nose or crank wobble, that only is a concern on early 1st gen miatas. 2nd gen there are no major concerns around that issue or engine grenading.

Yes doing it in a shop will probably be $800-$1000, mostly labour. Parts are probably like $300.

That's good to know. Have you ever heard anything about the NB frame rust issue for BC cars? That's the ony thing that makes me consider a 94+ NA, but finding one at a decent price and condition is much harder than early NA's.

sonick 08-29-2020 07:25 AM

It's not so much frame rust for both na/NB but it's rocker panel rust that is common due to water drains getting clogged and dirt piling up inside the body getting wet. More of an issue with na likely due to age and thinner metal (just a guess), but still not completely fixed with NBs.

Maybe due to the age or slight changes to the drainage it's easier to find a rust free NB.

This is why you are seeing sky high prices for clean rust free NAs. But eventually as NBs get older and rarer I think the same thing will happen to NB pricing.

Clean interior and not modified. A fresh coat of paint and this would probably sell for double?

westopher 08-30-2020 11:44 AM

Great colour combo, but a fresh coat of paint would probably cost double.

jing 08-30-2020 11:45 AM

IMO there is nothing desirable about a pre-facelift automatic non-IS

westopher 08-30-2020 11:52 AM

Could be a great starting point for a build for cheap though if it’s not rusty. With a manual and an m50 it will be just as fun as if it were in a late model. But yeah as it is, I mean it would be a cool car for my grandma or something haha.

Looks clean but auto, wasted paint and 318i so isn’t that an m10 for being an ‘84/85? Nothing desirable about having an engine from the early 60’s in your e30

roastpuff 08-30-2020 06:57 PM

Well, there she is, on the way home. The Good Buys thread comes through once again!!

I mean it's a Miata, you could lose one of those in your couch.

The ferry guys were packing us in so tight. It was a 3 sailing wait kind of day, got to Swartz Bay at 3pm and barely got on to the 7pm sailing.

You park as close as you can so more cars can fit.
