1999 Porsche 911 $19,500 143k km https://www.facebook.com/marketplace...65097340230836 https://scontent.fyvr4-1.fna.fbcdn.n...b6&oe=5F9EB389 |
^ i was going to post this one. lot of car for the money. Very early car w amber tails and the old CD player. At first I assumed a japan import at this price, but no sidemarkers and has bumperettes. 14 pics and none of the front end is weird - not sure if litronics (my spidey sense says no - and the halogens have burnt the lenses, hence the missing pics) Not a big deal to retrofit if that's the case. Still, IMS done and a double row bearing car is good. Interior looks clean. Best chance of a mechanical LSD option on the early cars. If I was in the market for one of these, I'd be checking it out for sure. If anybody here goes to see it, make sure you listen for a drivetrain noise. These early cars are susceptible to pinion bearing failure in the trans. Not terminal, but spendy to have fixed. 996's are appreciating everywhere else in the world. We're just slow on the uptake. Being able to grab one of these for under 20k CAD is a bargain. Silver over black will always be classic. 18" twists look great. Get the right one at the bottom of the curve and you could drive it for free for a long time. |
I used to walk by that car often in kits. Looked always well kept for what it’s worth. |
Man.. I don’t think I can convince my wife or myself I need a Porsche right now... but oh man I want a Porsche right now. lol |

Geez Producer you sold me on 996. Salesman in the making! |
He’s just trying to raise the value of his own lol |
As long as the necessaries are done, the 996 is awesome. It sounds good, it has a ton of backend grip, seats are good, weight is only 3000lbs. The aero kit works and still gets big smiles from strangers. The 997.1 isn't that much further ahead at twice the price, interior aside. |
I'm enjoying the vids this guy puts out. He's got a workshop and dealership in the UK that specializes in reconditioning 996's. I like that idea. Pick a car (w good resale) and really focus on it. Not Singer levels at all, just bringing them back up to a high OEM standard. |
996's are tremendous value. |
Last week my coworker bought a 2000 Porsche Boxster S Auto 73kms (he is 60+ and doesn’t care about manual). $13,600. 996 and 986 are good value and IMS is over blown. |
^ Did you say IMS is blown????? *anyone buying a Porsche nowadays even if they don’t know cars it seems* |
The IMS issue seems to be more likely among cars that have sat for long periods of time, and is super uncommon on the earlier cars. It’s not like it’s a non issue, but nothing near as common as rod bearings on the e9x m3 or subframe issues on the e46 m3. It’s certainly nothing close to a guaranteed failure, it’s just if it does fail, the gamble might cost you 25k (the price of an ok 996 or double the price of a boxster.) |
From what I remember seeing before, it is at least common enough that there are a bunch of cheaper motor swap options that other people have already proven are possible so even if you do get unlucky it's not as big of a deal as it used to be. If you don't want to do that you can sell it as a roller or part it out, either way you're not just scrapping it for a couple hundred bucks. I don't know what Porsche is like as far as maintaining a supply of OEM parts for older models, but that car is 21 years old already and at some point certain things tend to start running out and the value of used parts starts to climb. A bumper skin I used to be able to buy new for $300 now goes for $1k used. That's just for a measly Toyota so I can imagine what Porsche stuff starts to do. |
I heard that the IMS issue was made overblown by someone who, conveniently, owns a Porsche repair shop, specializing in IMS issues. Probably as overblown as the E46 330ci/i/xi (m54b30 motors) oil pump nut (OPN) issue, where the OPN + sprocket will either shear off or the OPN will back off (even tho its reverse threaded). |
IMS is overblown internet garbage. If (not when) my engine blows, I'll respond back here. People who report their IMS exploded are often those who barely drive or perform general/routine maintenance on their car. Most of the time, it's not even related to IMS and they easily blame IMS. If you get the chance, have the time, have the money, get a 986 or 996. They're great value. |
