Man, that Boxster hard top alone is easily worth $2000, plus a few hundred dollars of hardware spindles that come along with it. At that price, it's a worthy daily driver without having to worry about leaky soft tops in Vancouver.

I don't know the car myself, but I'm honestly tempted. I think it can be had for less, and the boxster hard tops are worth WAY more than 996 HT's

Even if this thing popped, you could part the top, the trans, the wheels, the litronics etc.

Poor mans cayman, if you're willing to accept that a ~8500? dollar car is disposable.
Any idea what motor in this car? I assume another 2.7L motor?

1999 was a crossover year. Depending on build date and build spec, it could be a 2.5L or 2.7L. One can validate the VIN number and decode it through one of the many VIN decoders. The other option is to ask the seller. It appears he has (or has access to?) a Durametric scanner and should tell you.

semi off topic but can a dealership only sell a car as a lease? Found one I liked on autotrader, went in to take a look and the salesman said I could only lease it, not buy/finance it. It's a used car dealer in Richmond

I know Ferrari will only lease certain models and only if you’re a preferred customer and agree to some strict rules.

I would imagine some other supercar manufacturers have similar policies.

On a used car, presumably a regular car? Seems weird.

Local exotic stores will make clients sign a "first right of refusal" on their purchases. (original selling dealer gets first dibs)

esp special limited cars or the bigger cars (aventador, speciale, pista etc)

How does that work exactly? Couldn't I just say no to their offer?

If not, is there guidance on what they have to offer?

So per say, dude buys ferrari whatever. drives for 9 months. trades it in at porsche store, owner of ferrari has to give ferrari a ring to give them a heads up.

Ferrari will then give them a number to work with. If Porsche willing to take the car in for more money, Porsche can keep the car. If Ferrari gives the better number (they usually do to protect their product) then Ferrari takes the car and will be a IN and Out car at Porsche.

Just a first dibs before trading in thing. If Ferrari finds out they didnt get first dibs, then usually a legal letter gets sent to said owner for not honoring the first right of refusal agreement.

I've seen Lambo doing this before, but doesnt happen often.

Lease mandatory because they can make more money out of the deal by signing you up to a 9% interest rates.

yeah I figured they make more money out of it, but surprised they wouldn't consider selling it outright at all. I guess best way is to call the dealer ahead of time and ask if it's lease only or not.

not really. the operator is responsible for the car's well being / maintenance.

third party lease in house is no different from writing a deal on a piece of napkin.

The right of first refusal thing can be tricky. As a buyer, best to be aware of what you are signing in to at the beginning. I have seen this backfire on the dealer because they were being shady with the clauses and sloppy with the documentation. Dealer sued the owner for selling the car to another entity without informing the dealer first, the dealer lost. This has happened a couple times. It seems that the right of first refusal thing is more of a courtesy, not really enforceable. I'm sure some dealers may be better at making it stick than others. If you are buying a highly desirable 6+ digit car, you should be able to afford a good lawyer to help you interpret the fine print in the purchase agreement.
