2003 Honda S2000. $40k So it's not so much a "deal", but it has only 32'000km on it, so a ton of life left in her and no claims, which together might be a good fit for someone hunting for those specifically in an S2000.

Hondaracer 04-14-2021 05:51 PM

At that price point you better be wanting to make love to the tail pipe. Infinitely better, newer cars available

westopher 04-14-2021 06:45 PM

It’s not about better. It’s about what you like, and at that mileage, it could be one of the best examples of your favourite car you’ll ever come across.

If you’re not a collector and just stretching the budget for that you’d better be crazy about S2K’s to the point of obsession.

I’ve driven a couple and given them a good drive and spending 40k on a 20 year old car with sub 250hp. Personally I couldn’t help but feeling you left a tonne on the table if it was me.

Much like the Type R’s I just really don’t think that are THAT great of a car.

westopher 04-14-2021 07:18 PM

I totally get it, but obviously I’m on the other side. I spent over 40k on a car with less than 200hp. I could have bought a 997, a corvette, an f80, whatever else but I like being the only person you are going to see in a day, or month for that matter driving what I am, with either car I own.

Hondaracer 04-14-2021 07:29 PM

Your car is much more rare than an S2K though

One day S2 might be there as well I guess, but I’d put yours much higher up on that desirable list given the pedigree

westopher 04-14-2021 07:53 PM

True, but mine is also WAY down the ladder as far as e30 m3s go. For one with the s2ks milage it would be a 150-175k car.

Special K 04-14-2021 09:20 PM

Those Enkei wheels though...

68style 04-15-2021 07:34 AM

Neither person (S2K buyer or E30 M3 buyer) will lose anything during their ownership if/when they decide to sell I think.

That said, besides mileage, I don't feel like that particular S2K is the greatest... maybe it's the shitty mags (I know it comes with the stockers) and boring colour (a personal choice I suppose).

Hakkaboy 04-15-2021 07:59 AM

100% agree that this particular AP1 looks boring appearance wise.

However, being a 2003, it is the latest AP1 you can buy so if you really want that 9000rpm Redline, then this is the one to get.

On the 02+, you get glass rear window instead of plastic and I believe the door panels allow slightly more interior room as well with some additional storage. Plus door tweeters and other bits like a metal dead pedal

Different rear tail lights with a chrome ring and not the pink faded brake lights that could get you a VI from Cain and co.

That being said, if you drove the S2 on the streets, it's basically a rwd Civic.
With modern cars, the ND2 Miata is at the same level as the S2, if not better.

So I get Hondaracers sentiments about it being overpriced.

But the S2 is one of the last great cars from Honda's golden era and people grew up wanting these cars and can now finally afford them.

Newer doesn't necessarily mean better. Depending on what people want out of a car, newer is quite often worse. I drove a Subaru that's newer and more powerful than my car and it was the most boring thing I'd ever driven.

But even if they are functionally identical people have preferences for styling and brand. For a Honda guy who wants a roadster this is kind of the only option.

Hondaracer 04-15-2021 10:11 AM

Lol well yea, Honda + roadster is S2K or nothing

I’m anti-miata but for a sporty vert aren’t you getting a better “performing” car with some of these newer miatas that fall into that price point?

You’re also in the realm of Boxsters, maybe push the budget a little more for first gen Cayman, etc?

Yes, the new ND2 Miata's are more car than this example of an S2.
That being said, this particular car is priced highish. Similar examples in the US are selling for $27K USD.

That being said, if the person wants an S2, they will buy an S2.
If they have $40K for a convertible sports car, then yes there are other options out there.
The Boxster is a good example. Similar power in the base Boxster but a lot heavier. So from a driving perspective, the S2 is better than a base Boxster.

Just curious, other than craigslist, where are you guys finding cars for sale nowadays? Craigslist seems somehow to be dying out a bit. I've tried kijiji but it seems more east-of-BC centric, and Facebook Marketplace is just hot garbage when it comes to finding things. Autotrader is still there. Any other sites that you can recommend?

I've tried some of the big conglomerates like:

Dilawri Group - https://www.dilawri.ca/en/british-co...used-inventory
Open Road - https://openroadautogroup.com/invent...ndition%3AUsed
Destination - https://www.destinationauto.ca/vehic...w=grid&sc=used
Duek Group - https://www.dueckgm.com/inventory/se...tock_type=Used

And whoever else you can think of. Sometimes cars will show up on their own website before CL or Autotrader.

Because they often have many brands, you can find all their used vehicles located at the different locations.

68style 04-15-2021 01:54 PM

Everyone is going to Facebook Marketplace, but as you've already surmised it's complete dogshit to search on... absolutely horrid... it's like they tried to make it as bad as possible.

bcrdukes 04-15-2021 02:37 PM

It's not the greatest on the West Coast but you could sometimes find the odd hidden gem on AutoTrader.ca

Gerbs 04-15-2021 04:09 PM

I drove the Boxster when I was in LA for vacation, I think I need to try to Boxster S or 918, for some reason, it wasn't super fun to drive. But I also don't track so I can't tell if one car is better than another.

bcrdukes 04-15-2021 07:06 PM

Nothing is fun when you're stuck on the Downtown interchange where the 10, 405, 101, and 5 all meet. :p

s2k are trading for early cayman s if not already surpassed it

maybe 1 day it'll catch up with the elise which is certainly not getting any cheaper either

to think s2k was as low as 10k and nsx as low as 25-30k at one point DansGame
