^ lol a friend of mine was selling his used dirt bike he had bought brand new, 1 owner. A 2015 CRF250R

The bike was as good as you could possibly hope for, one of the best examples on Craigslist for a used dirt bike etc. I think my buddy wanted 4500 at the time a few years back. That’s at the top of the price point for the bike but it was also justified

Finally had a couple guys come by and look at it take it for a rip and then try to do anything in their power to pick it apart to lower the price, the guy even said “well I’m gonna have to do an oil change eventually”

My buddy finally had enough and basically said if you’re going to try and nickel and dime me on general maintenance items then this isn’t the bike for you, take a hike

I actually went to test drive a car yesterday, but after a test drive, the seller was only willing to knock a few hundred dollars off on a close to a $20000 car. So I told him I'll think about it. Car looked it was driven hard and put away wet. Leaves in the engine bay, fur? Leaves all in the trunk carpet, over all dirty exterior and interior and you expect top dollar? No real service records and this is before dings and scratches.

That's totally on you for going the whole way knee deep and not landing on a price you were hoping for. Should have known when to call it quits or just hurry up and get your Tesla already.

THIS... man... how many times have I been selling a $3-5,000 car that's 15+ years old and some goof from Surrey or Abbotsford comes out and sees a scratch on the bumper and looks me dead in the eyes while he caresses it and talks out loud about how that's going to have to be painted and licks his lips thinking "that's another $500 I'm getting off this price"... little do they know that, since I'm neither moving nor a crack addict, I'm more than happy to send them home without a car after their lowball offer.

The best buyers are the dads who are buying something for their daughter or son and, if the kid is excited, everything goes out the window lol.

This is either a lot of fun or a lot of tears (or both) for $5k... take a walk on the wild side... probably an interesting guy to BS with anyway, badges on the grill and longer-term owner

guess im not too worried about a bit of criticism on a 20 year old daily

the interesting thing is so many see a scratch/scuff and it totally turns them off...guess appearance is more important than being mechanically sound and newish tires/brakes/battery when you're buying for 5k? haha

If you're looking to shag the Helen Mirren type this is definitely the type of ride that makes that happen. Gotta make sure there haven't been too much WAP in that back seat.

Pffffft, when i hopped in almost all my convertibles, i was that little kid. Everything went out the window

Del sol SIR: cracked and dented front bumper, had to jump start it, drove it, 1/4 chub, bought it

07 corvette, interior was not as listed, 0-60 in empty bank account

04 and 03 Z4, having been driving a shitbox with 80hp prior probably, once my ass got sucked into the seat, once again, the buyer knew he had me with the shit eating grin on my face

07 saturn sky, the god dam goof listed it with 50kms on it, hopped in, started to drive it, it had god dam 50MILES = 80kms. Welp, knowing me, once i hit full throttle on the highway, that went out the window, plus i spent the day going to nanaimo to look at it, so i was doomed not to buy it

At what point do you guys do inspections on cars?
Im an intermediate mechanic if anything, and i have never gone past a DIY inspection, (yes i have been burned probably 3 of my 25+ cars)

I've never paid for an inspection, 80 something cars. If I look at a car I want to buy. I look at the body, and for past body repairs. I've bought cars on ebay and other online auctions, as long as the body checks out I'm not too worried about the mechanicals, often don't bother with a test drive. Although I'm not looking at twin turbo v12 mercedes.

What gets me, if the car wasn't a sure thing and I didn't buy then the seller does a follow up call. That's enough to get me to buy.

only car i've inspected in the last 20 years is my 996. at the end of the day, I needed to know if the cyl bores were cool. there's no way to get a peek without some surgery. instincts said it was good, and they of course turned out to be, but I wasn't bothered paying the bill.

only real burn story was a e30 318is i bought way too fast. got caught up in the chase and didn't give it a good diy inspection. found deep rust under the fusebox after buying. only lost a grand, but it taught me a lesson. money well lost.

i am disappointed to see the days of CL finds circling down the drain. FB marketplace just isn't the same. My brother has 60+ messages for a (cheap) car he's selling right now, and it's just a bunch of whiny lowball bitches. FB has made it way too easy. Literally the difference between copy/pasting an email address knocks out 90% of the BS on CL. It's too bad - i feel like it's the end of an era of wheeler dealing.

EDIT: lol donk - going to the island is a killer. I feel like sellers know they've got you. I've bought a few, but only when I knew i was getting a deal at asking. there's not much negotiation when you're standing there w a return reservation and crazy ferry fever in your eyes

I took the ferry over to Victoria to look at an EP3, gosh, a decade ago already.

Didn't buy it cause he wanted market for a car that's had a lot of of body work done. Maybe multiple times or just one giant accident who knows, just wasn't a no accident car as claimed. Left empty handed.

Drove fine though. Wife was not a fan of the car cause she said I'd look like an Asian punk kid driving my bright blue Civic.

Go figures... I drive a bright blue BMW now. Still an Asian punk kid I guess.

I had a guy do that with my 2007 Grand Cherokee, complaining about things like the brake pads being at ~40% and comparing it to a brand new TrailHawk. Of course an 8 year old (at the time) vehicle isn't going to be in the same shape as a brand new one that's 4x the price.

^this.

Whenever I'm driving a long way to look at a car, I never tell the seller that info, so they don't know that they might have me by the short and curlies. If anything, I try and get them to come and meet me somewhere so they have some travel invested in the deal as well.

Might be a nice 2 year disposable car for those that know how to turn a wrench.

Yes it is very unreliable, but dealership may give you warranty and any newer car will depreciate its value in a year or two. This car will still hold some value or some worth in parting out.

Kinda hard to take a ferry to nanaimo, or drive to smithers, to find out the seller is not available until next thursday

Because I knew exactly what I was getting into, we agreed on a price before I even left.

You don’t drive 13+ hours on a whim each way and say your from around the corner, then the guy goes on a fishing trip and cancels lol. It goes both ways. I was there and back in 36 hours, with a quick night in a cute little Coffee roasters Airbnb. Now I have a project... another project.
